microSD card and program installation

Hello again all,

I've been trying to look through this forum and others and have found quite a bit of information on microSD/microSDHC cards. I'm planning on purchasing an 8gb microSDHC card to use with the Tilt since a lot of people seem to be having good experiences with it. I do have some questions though regarding installing programs to the card.

How do you know which programs to install on the card and which to install on the phone? For instance, is it wise to install programs such as cleaning/maintentence programs on the phone. Also, regarding programs such as games, if you install a file in the memory card, will you still be able to access the program under the "Games" folder/application under programs?

Thanks for any help that can be offered.

its a best practice to install just about everything to external storage.

some programs that need to reside in memory, or today screen plugins, on the other hand, should be installed to the devices main storage.

examples like sbsh pocketbreeze, webis pocket informant, and lakeridge wisbar advance should be installed to main storage because of their reliance on system resources and sometimes programs can have hooks to built in programs that are essential for functionality, such as the calendar or contacts

maintenance programs, games, etc. should be installed to external storage. they will have a shortcut along with the other applications and games under the program menu.

most programs that need to be installed to main storage will say so during the install. otherwise, it may be mentioned in the readme or on the website from the developer.

be sure to read this before you do anything

and this in regard to where you should/can install things

use the search feature here on mobilitysite and the search feature over at smartphonemag.com for some of Werners' Complete tutorials and informations. he has spent years creating what is in my mind, the best resource for all things pocket pc and windows mobile.

i dont think thats very accurate. again, some things NEED to be installed to the device. and some make more sense to install to the device.

programs installed to main memory will function much faster.

the idea is to have a balance of functionality and performance. when you start installing tons of apps to your device, tons of today plugins, etc... youre going to bog down the device to the point where it wont work any more, or anything like it should

Today plug-ins should always be installed into main memory as a rule of thumb. I doesn't mean that they will not function if installed on the memory card.

because of the bloatware that comes on the Tilt, I have installed my plugins to the storage card and they have worked. I do not know if they would work faster or better installed in the main memory. I installed SKTools to the main memory and it used up just about all the memory and so I uninstalled it. I have not tried putting it back on into the storage card. I have Pocketbreeze, HTCHome plugin, ILauncher plugin, Resco Today plugin all installed on the storage card. I have used all of the at the same time and have choosen just some to have active and have experienced no problems.

It is still best practice to have all continously running apps installed to main mem.

MOST occasionally used apps work fine on storage card, In fact many of these apps (YMMV) do not need installing once it is installed to the storage card beyond making shortcuts in the programs menu. I made copies of the shortcuts in the storage card for easy replacement after hard resets

What do I need to copy to keep program shortcuts on my storage card? One reason I have not upgraded to 6.1 is that I would have to reinstall all the software back on to the phone.

using file manager:

make a folder on storage card

browse \windows\startmenu\programs for the apps you have installed on the storage card... press and hold, COPY.

browse to storge card\folder, PASTE as Shortcut

Repeat
