My phone broke and I though anyone who bought it from AT&T might be interested in how the warranty works.
First off I really like my phone although sometimes I think the Apple commercials between Mac and PC apply to our phones too but I REALLY LIKE my phone.
What broke is it won't charge anymore. Something must have broken inside the phone cause if I stand on one foot and hold the plug just right... it will charge. Otherwise I cannot recharge the phone.
I called the warranty department and they were great, "no problem, no matter what we'll get this fixed for you". I like that since we paid sooooo much for this phone.
Typical questions were asked to verify that water damage wasn't the cause nor dropping the phone. Everything was great and we move to the T's & C's of the return.
I was asked if I had any third party software on the phone... he he... as if I would be on this board if I didn't have 3rd party software on the phone. I asked why and this is when things got a little strange. Apparently there is spyware and viruses that have been added to our phones by 3rd party code. If the code added is suspect they could charge $450 for the phone after they inspect the phone once received. If damage is obvious to the phone they could charge the same $450 after they inspect the phone. I agreed to this since I know that other than dropping it from my lap to my carpeted floor... and knowing what code I installed neither of these really worried me. Although it would have been nice and I think mandatory for the sales representative to tell us about all this when the phone was.
Imagine having a hardware issue with a PC you bought and the warranty is revoked cause you have a virus on your PC????? I think not.
To make matters worse... I get a reconditioned phone as a replacement with no battery and no battery cover.
I still like my phone but this upsets me and next time I will ask tons of questions before I buy a phone. I just think a warranty should replace your unit with a new unit just like the one you got in the first place.
Now if this phone shows up and it's running 6.0 instead of 6.1, I will have another set of rants and raves for you.
Alright... by a show of hands... who has got a verified case of spyware or suffered a virus on your phone... or am I just naive? I am sure they are out there but I just haven't heard of it.
It is typical for all warranty replaced equipment (optionally older than X days.. 30 possibly) to be replaced by reconditioned equipment. I've seen this for PCs, laptops, phones, 2 way radios, etc. Nothing unusual about that.
It is also standard for all replaced/exchanged equipment to be ONLY the major component... no extra pieces like battery, cover, etc. Nothing unusual there.
Software issues can easily be fixed by a hard reset... It would take a hell of a virus that can reprogram the ROM. I'm thinking that the whole spyware on the phone thing is just a half understood directive, misspoken by a service rep.

I had a problem where my tilt stopped charging, unless you held the usb connector at just the right angle....
Turns out the connector on the bottom of the phone had somehow cracked.
I took it to the local at&t repair center, and they had no problems issuing a replacement for me at no charge. Unfortunately, they didn't have any in stock there, so they shipped it overnight and I had it the next day.

AT&T Tilt, Official WM 6.1
After 11 months and 18 days, my charger connection died. With 12V not one of 3 chargers worked. With AC not one of 4 worked (wife has same style) but 1 of my 3 USB cables would charge it and sync. ATT service said a pin was broken on the charger port, and replaced the phone on the spot. I put WM6.1 into use and after reload of software, and sync with computer to get contacts and calendar back in, was up and running. Very nice job ATT and glad it happened now instead of 13 days later when the warranty went poof.
