Aximsitex50icon HTC, Tilt, does it NEED to be unlocked?

Hi all, I'm pretty much a new guy here in the scheme of things. I have been growing my knowledge a little at a time by reading thru this site and the XDA site too. I probably skipped over the answer to my question in the infinite posts. So, bear with me.
I have an ATT Tilt, I have been adding in a few programs to make it more suitable to me. All of these that I have put in action are ones that other people have programed and packaged. The one that I cannot get to stick (work), is the HTC home customizer. (HHCv1.0Final) It went onto the phone just fine and I can get into set things up in the menu, but the settings just don't stick when I apply them, nro will it save a scheme.

So the base question here is...
Does my phone need to be unlocked? What is the benefit of having a phone unlocked (besides being able to use it on other carriers)? Does this allow me to be able to do registry edits? (eventually when I get smart enough to do edits)

Thanks for the help!

Kyle

The only real benefit is if you want to use you Tilt with another GSM carrier like T-mobile. It may need to be unlocked to work overseas. I have used mine in Japan without an issue.
