Bluetooth internet setup
Right, this is really annoying me now, I have followed every guide on the internet and none of them work. All I want to do is get my PDA (which is running wm5) to connect to my computer's bluetooth so that it can access the internet via my comptuer.

Has anyone done this and if they have, can they do a detailed step by step on how to set it up as it keeps failing at different points depending on which step by step I use. Some also assume that you can pair the device, I can't even get that far, it is simply refusing to do anything.

Thank you in advance.

Set up internet connection sharing on your host PC. What operating system is it running? I believe there is a setting in ActiveSync that will allow you to share an internet connection through the AS connection, and it should work whether you use the wired connection or the Bluetooth. Also, try searching our sister site, Aximsite, for tips on connecting via bluetooth.

And don't give up, you need to bump your thread once a day! I missed this one somehow.

I don't like bumping threads, seems a waste of space and gives my post count a false number.

Anyway, I have tried pretty much everything, on AximSite as well. However, I think there is something seriously wrong with my current install of XP Pro SP2 as other simple things are not working either.

When I go home for Christmas I am doign a reformat and starting from scratch and setting it all up again. I will try the Bluetooth then and see if I can get any further.

The main problem I get at the moment is that I can create a partnership but the only thing my computer is sharing is a serial port, I have all of the options ticked but only the serial port is actually being shared.

I maybe missing something very obvious but I have tried every tutorial I could find on the internet (I do mean to about page 15 on google, trying every link, Oh, I have it set to show 100 results per page!!!!). So I have put the effort in to it, it just doesn't want to work for me. It also doesn't help that there isn't actually a guide for wm5 phone edition.

It also doesn't help that I have to hand in a 12000 word report by the end of the month and I have written 1000 words so far, so I don't have much free tim eon my hands at the moment.

OK, first things first. Pairing. That is the most important thing. You have to setup your Bluetooth settings on your desktop to allow accessibility for the PDA. Probably by default your computer is setup to only allow devices to connect that is in a specific list and you have to manually add the device. This is sometimes this way so that everyone in the world won't try to pair their device to your desktop without your knowledge. I would like to give you step by step instructions however I don't know what Bluetooth stack you are using on the desktop. That would be the first thing I would check. You can temporarily set your desktop to allow All Devices just to pair your device and then set it back to the original settings.

Once it is paired then you can connect to the desktop via Bluetooth. The desktop which has internet access can be used to access the internet on the device but a couple of things must happen first. There is two ways that a device can access the internet via Bluetooth through the desktop; 1. Using Activesync passthru or 2. Using ICS (internet connection sharing). The easiest thing is Activesync passthru. It is a bit slower though than using ICS. If you want to use ICS then you would need to setup ICS on your desktop. You can look at the help topics on your desktop to setup (depending on the OS you are using). Also instructions for ICS setup and Activesync is in my Bluetooth Guide on Aximsite.

Thanks for the reply Whitelyt.

I am using the Belkin stack that came on the CD for the USB Bluetooth dongle. I would check but it is currently uninstalled, it annoyed me!!!

I am running wm5 phone edition on my PDA and XP Pro SP2 fully up to date on my pc.

(Just a small question, connecting via bluetooth, will it use the computers internet connection or is it a true pass through, like AS when you have it connected with the USB cable? It's because I cannot seem to get the proxy for here set up on my pda to work, I can get internal sites but not external ones, on wifi (wifi is in th electure thatres, not in halls where I live - I'm at univeristy by the way!!) and AS connection. If the bluetooth uses the computers proxy settings then I will be fine and it will be worth working out, otherwise, I will just get all the way and be stuck at the proxy again. I hate proxies!!)

Thanks for your help in advance, it will be a great help.

When you do an activesync via Bluetooth it will use Activesync passthru just as if you are using a USB cable. I currently use that method for my video streaming over the internet when I have some downtime at work. I had to configure my work proxy on the PDA so that I can get access to the internet on my PDA. Make sure that your Pass Through options in Activesync is setup correctly or you will see cases where you can only get to internal sites but not external ones. Setting this along with the correct proxy will get things going for you.

it is not AS that is the problem, it is the uni proxy because wehn I am on campus and connect to the wifi hotspots I can get the internal sites but not the external sites, AS is not involved there. It just says the connection was lost. This is exactly the same problem and errors when I connect to AS and use the passthrough. I just need to get the proxy setup correctly, I have used the proxy that they say works (it works for my computer) but not my PDA. Do you have to enter anything other than the proxy address and the port number? (that is all I was given).

For your proxy settings, do you have the checkbox for "This network connects to the internet" checked?

Also, internet connectivity is largely based on DNS. I assume that your desktop is pulling a DHCP address that also has the DNS server that should be used. Check your PDA to see if your pulling a DHCP address and not using a static address. Go into your wifi interface settings and make sure that you are using a server assigned IP address.

Well, if it's any consolation, I have gone around and around with this myself. I have been able to sync via Bluetooth, but I have never been able to gain access to the internet via my Bluetooth connection with my computer. I have examined all the Bluetooth articles too, including the Aximsite one. I have followed the guidelines to the letter and have been frustrated at every turn. I've given it up for now, but if you get it worked out, maybe your solution will work for me too.

Sorry to dig up an incredibly old thread, but I have a cure for this.

I have found that if you turn the phone off under connections on the PDA, then sync via bluetooth, ensuring active sync is checked in the pc bluetooth settings, you then select IE on the PDA and it should connect to the internet.
