I am thinking of purchasing a Fuze but cannot justify spending additional sums for the gps and data package. Assuming I can get one with a contract that excludes data and gps services,,,, is it feasible/possible to use the Fuze's wi-fi capability in those places where wi-fi is offered free?
Of course, you can use GPS and wifi without incurring any additional usage fees. GPS is not dependent on a data connection unless the maps are stored online (which is what AT&T is selling subscriptions to).
You'll probably want to disconnect the data connection settings to prevent accidentally connecting via GPRS/Edge/3G, but that is easy to do. You'll also probably want to purchase some GPS software/maps so you can use the GPS.

Most AT&T phones have their Tel-Nav GPS which is a $10 a month service. You can still use the GPS without any monthly chargers. Simply load what ever GPS app you want.

May I ask how?
I notice when I run certain programs, the little 3G icon (indicate WCDMA/UMTS in use) will appear on top of the screen.
I don't want to connect to internet in anyway other than wifi.

I followed the example above and rebooted after completing the configuration. However, IE and Opera was still able to connect to the internet. I've not set up the WIFI, so it's unlikely to go through a WIFI connection. Am I missing something else? Thanks in advance for any help on how to disable AT&T data connection.

Are you sure it is not connecting via WIFI? If it is connecting through GPRS/EDGE/3G, do you see the large and small icons on the top of the screen that indicates a live data connection?

Julie, I am not sure what happeneded. I still get the 3G connection icon. I decided to delete the Media Net and am now unable to connect to the internet, which is what I want:) Now I can set up the WIFI connection and be sure it's using the home wireless connection. Thanks again for all your help:)
You'd only need a data plan if you plan to use the GPRS/EDGE/3G services much...otherwise you'll get charged a premium for data services.
But if you only plan to connect via WIFI connection, there's no reason to subscribe to data services...and I think $30 is ridiculously expensive too.

Demand the plan that you want. =D i know it's possible i work with people who pay for the MEdiaNet plan and use it like it's the business plan which is $50 a month!
