Tell us about the good and bad of your HTC Touch

The title says it all. I have an opportunity to upgrade my Blackberry 7250 to another device and I an hesitating between the Pearl II or the HTC Touch. I have seen both and they are cool devices. The plan for the HTC is about $30 cheaper per month compare to the Pearl II. What would you suggest?

Thanks,
Frenchy

All comes down having a keyboard or not having a keyboard, WM versus Blackberry, memory differences, and form factor. I have no idea what the specs are for the Pearl.

Not necessarily; the HTC Touch Dual (which I have) is the same as the Touch, but with a slide-out keyboard.

Is the Dual available on your network, Frenchy? I am, personally, not a fan of the Pearl; they are neither personal or business phones, and instead they fall awkwardly somewhere in between.

Personally I'd like something like the TyTN/TyTN II but without the keyboard...

The New Touch(s) are probably the closest i'm going to get...

Martin -> I am just looking at the Touch without the sliding keyboard. I look at both and I am trying to reduce the bulk of the Blackberry as much as possible. Dual look great too but I like the slim Touch only.

Just got mine 2 days ago from Sprint. So far I love this compared to my x51v.
This device has all the features i wanted to get in a PDA phone since i was holding off getting one. First, it isn't a Treo or Blackberry and it doesn't look like some corporate weenie device. Second, it does not have the useless little keyboard like treo's or a bulky slide out. Third, WM6 instead of WM5. I had all kinds of issues with WM5 that I was hoping would be resolved with WM6. I deployed 50 x51's and x51v's and most if not all had horrible trouble. (glad I wasn't the one who recommended them)

The only things I don't like compared to the x51v is the smaller screen, otherwise the touch handles everything i wish the x51v would have done (ex: turn on and be available to use immediately!)

Some important notes though, the Touch is not compatible with PCS PictureMail or Sprint Navigation. Since Sprint Nav comes free with the Pro Pack I am kinda peeved that it doesn't work on this VERY expensive device. I have heard that PictureMail generally does not work with PDA phones which i was unaware of being this is my first PDA phone. Also, the Sprint version does not have 802.11.

Otherwise I love the Touch, it's size and useablitly is awesome! Being able to use major funtions with only a finger is handy beyond belief and the size is perfect. I have not tried using built-in GPS. A co-worker has one and said that using the GPS feature in GoogleMaps caused a crash so hard he had to hard reset. Hopefully HTC will release fixes soon.

I bought HTC Touch for my wife (unlocked GSM version). At first we (she) liked it, although screen was a bit too small for PDA functions. Of course TouchFlo is not a "must have"... Unfortunately I returned it because it started dropping calls (after ~20 min or so it would just turn phone radio off; had to explicitly turn it on to make calls again). I googled and found other similar complaints; called HTC -- usual advice to soft/hard reset (didn' help). Eventually I replaced it with N95, but it was too hard for my wife to use it as PDA... Ended up with the perfect solution -- her old Nokia 6126 flip phone + lPAQ 111 from Costco: everything works like a clock, easy and conveniently...

I have now had my Sprint HTC Touch for two weeks and overall I am happy with the performance. As in any new device I have had some growing pains but most have now worked themselves out. I do have two problems I am trying to work out at the moment.

1. In TouchFlow, the link for "Pocket Express" generates the following error "Error opening the shortcut or locating the target filename". Since the operator is not allowed to configure this screen it is not easily resolved. Fortunately the link works in all the other screens. I have found there is a new program out that will allow configuration; I am waiting for a few more threads to be generated before I try it.

2. Bluetooth works great with all my devices (X51V, Sync in my car, Motorola headset); however, when paired to my laptop it finds no services. Therefore I have to use a USB cord to sync the unit. I was hoping to do this with bluetooth. Looks like I will have to spend some more time searching for a reason. I tried both the Toshiba BT stack and the XP2 stack on the laptop. The Toshiba (normal installation would not even pair), the XP2 stack finds no services.

The only other thing I wish it had was a larger screen; however, then the portability would be reduced. Fortunately for me the screen has a good resolution and I have no problem seeing everything.

For GPS I am so far staying with the X51V using TomTom, works great that way and there are too many threads about problems on the Touch.

I use Tomtom on my touch with the "leaked" rom, No issues. The only problems I've come across... There seems to be issues with using/storing apps on the MicroSD card. Seems to be corruption issues that many, many folks are hoping gets fixed....

Steve, about the bluetooth issue, using the Tosh stack, it doesn't have a default AS profile. Set up WMDC/Activesync to be able to use one of the COM ports first, make sure you set it to one of the virtual BT com port, then setup activesync from the phone. Make sure ALL pairing is removed from PC/Phone first. By all pairing, I mean to the phone/PC. Not things like keyboards, etc. :) It's kind of a stupid way to setup, but that's how you do it.

Oh yeah, nero:

for the sprint nav, works fine with the leaked rom. If you aren't comfortable with it, wait for the official release.... Also, picturemail is known issue with sprint and all their PPC type phones. They have "promised" a fix for this.

The leaked rom has 6.1, Rev A and full GPS. tho see my notes on GPS and power. That 1100mah battery just doesn't cut it!!!

The Bad...

I've run into a major glitch with the HTC touch that I 'm waiting for tech support people to solve
I'm on my third HTC touch, each with the same problem, loss of signal (service) The problem only begins after I connect my phone to an external stationary antenna while at my cottage. The bad is that after I disconnect the phone from the antenna and return home I can't regain a signal unless I'm within a stones throw from the provider's tower. Go back to my cottage and reconnect the phone to the antenna and all works again as long as I stay connected to the antenna.

Tech support has been trying to solve this problem but for a few weeks but If they can't come up with a solution i'll have to dump the phone.

My fiancee & I both got the VX6900/HTC Touch a few days ago...and we both love them! :-) I used mine with my ThinkOutside Stowaway BT keyboard & it rocks! Now if I can figure out which drivers to use with my ThinkOutside BT mouse I'll be tickled. Regardless, we both are very happy with the HTC Touch.

This is a niche device. You want a shirt pocket phone with PDA functions, this is it. Yes, its underpowered ( but can easily be overclocked) and it's short sufficient memory (can handle a 16gb memory card), but otherwise I find no fault with it. I am experiencing difficulty in buy accessories in my part of the world, but that's pretty much a one off problem.

If I were a business user, I'd look elsewhere but IMHO it's a great personal phone/pda and well worth the money.
