Imate Jam/MDA compact

My phone contract expires at the end of this month so I'm looking around for a new phone.

I can get a really good deal (and GPRS tarif) on an MDA compact (also known as the Imate JAM) and it looks small enough for me to be able to carry it as a phone along with my X50V. Has anyone used this? Does it work well as a phone? (all the fancy features in the world won't help if it doesn't) and of course does it play nice with your PocketPC?

I just got one and I love it, harleyxlc from this site also has one. I almost got the Eten M500 instead since it will be upgraded to 5.0 but decided to go with the jam since it is smaller and I liked that it has a metal casing.

I am really enjoying the JAM. It works better than past PPC smartphones I have had and the size is wonderful. The speakerphone is mediocre, but generally the phone features are good. Reception always seems to be on the low side compared to a standard phone. For some serious discussions, check out xda developers

May I ask why you would keep the Dell, too? Is is the vga screen :)

Thanks for the link... yes it is the VGA screen. The Jam is 'phone' sized so I can carry 2 boxes and hopefully use BT on the Jam to let me web browse on the Axim.

(of course if I fall head over heals in love with the Jam, I can always divorce the axim via ebay )

The other options i can get is the MDAIII (which is the PDA sized version with the keyboard) or the SDA (which is more of a standard phone).. The Jam just seems very cool

Interesting, keep us posted :) I had the 4705 and decided the VGA screen just wasn't required.

Well... I've only gone and done it :) after a weeks worth of research it seems like a nice piece of kit. Now all I have to do is wait 8 hours while it charges :bang:

I got it for free on my tarrif so if i decide i really hate it i can always flog it and get an ordinary BT GPRS phone. I still can't get over how small it is.

Congratulations! That is awesome that you got it for free, I wish someone here would carry phones like the Jam.

well in the UK at the moment there is a big push on from the major networks to get people to buy 3G phones. 3,Orange, Vodafone and O2 have their 3G networks going and Tmobile haven't yet. So I think they are trying to use GPRS and smartphones as a spoiler tactic (and it works for me :approve: )

cheers rob.... I've got my axim set up exactly the way i like it. I know where everything is.. and where to change all the settings etc.. now i have something that is similar.. but with extra stuf here.. stuff missing there and other bits renamed.

Either I will end up taming it... or it will end up taming me
