Moving To Australia - Need Guidance About Unlimited Data

Hi Folks,

I am sooner moving to Australia. I am used to unlimited 24x7 data plans where I listen to online music or TV for hours if not days. I am used to atleast EDGE and 1xRTT sppeds as I am using both GSM and CDMA plans right now and we know how cheap they are here.

Any how, while exploring Australia cell providers I am disppointed to fins plans of charge/10KB or time plans (!!!) and that too very costly! I could not find any paln unlimited 24x7 data plan - suitable as comparable to USA pricing - in Australia and I am embarrased that this will effect my appetite of data. I also wonder how they still have it such a way in Australia where we are moving to unlimited 24x7 3G/EVDO in the world.

Any help of any sort is appreciated. I plan to move after June.

Where are you moving from and where are you moving to? Australia is a lot bigger than you appear to think. :)

I believe they're up to 3G in some parts of aussieland. That speed can get you videocalls with the right PPC.

I am moving from CA and to Melbourne in Victoria and even move to regions as I like country life after a few intial weeks. I am worried at not so bright scope of unlimited data plans till I have explored.

I think you'll be pleased with the tech base in Aussieland. But being "in the country" is a way different thing from what it means in the US.

I wonder how there satilite program is going?
Can any residents enlighten us?

Ahh...I stayed there for a year 3 years ago.

Dont' be surprised at the expensive data rates...I never used data services there. There was an article one about one poor journalist from PC World who kept his mobile on paired up to his laptop...and forgot to turn MS Outlook off, kept it on the whole night.

The end: He got a $1000+ bill for his excess data use.

...Anyhow, GPRS coverage is fine but you would hesitate getting good 3G coverage. Just get ADSL there (which is not unlimited, either) and stay at home...

How embarrasing while you are used to 24x7 EDGE-GSM & 1XRTT-EVO-CDMA for more than an year and that too for an person in the field of hardware & software applications! I will miss my favorite online music & radio stations and online TV stations. I have set some of sweet & light music stations to wake me up in the morning with sweet songs (Resco Radio) while my AX 50V connects automaticaaly to network (BT Phone) and stearms the music.

I use a plan from a providor called TPG (http://www.tpg.com.au) which gives me unlimited access at 1.5Mb/256Kb upload/download up to 20GB/month, after which it throttles back to 64Kb for $49.95AUS. It's about the best deal you'll get over here, I'm afraid. It works well for me, and I've never exceeded the 20GB/month limit yet (and I'm what you'd call a "heavy" downloader :) ).
