I'm Neil (AKA 'nobby'), and I currently reside in Ventnor on the Isle of Wight, UK, with my wife Pauline and our crazy Weimaraner Lotte (that's a make of dog, btw).
I say currently, because the main reason behind the purchase of a sparkly new Axim X51v was the recent decision my wife and I made to move to Cornwall. We're looking forward to a new, mortgage-free life in the wilds of the south-west, and realised that we could make the process of locating potential properties we're interested in much easier with a sat-nav device.
It was a 'two (or more) birds with one stone' decision to go for a pocket PC rather than a dedicated sat-nav unit, because I wanted to also have the ability to do email/web stuff from the handheld too (plus try out art apps, and maybe the odd game or two...). Having read a lot of info before and since the purchase, I'm sure I made the right decision going for this PDA - however, as the package from Dell arrived literally 20 minutes ago, and its now sat in its cradle doing the first 8 hour charge before use, I still have a tantalising wait before I can start to try it out! So I thought (as it's actually arrived now and I feel more like a 'member'!) I'd make use of part of the time saying hello and getting involved in the forum chat.
I was particularly lucky with the timing of the decision - Dell had the X51v on offer at a 35% discount until the day after I ordered it. So it only cost £215 - which looks to me like the PDA bargain of the millennium!
I've also bought the tomtom 5 GB maps package, a GlobalSat SiRFSTAR BC-337 CF GPS receiver, a spare 2250mah li-Ion battery, a car charger and an unbranded but well-made (German) in-car mounting unit. Oh, and a Freedom BT keyboard. And I have the Logitech Mobile Freedom BT headset on order too.
So, quite a list of new toys - hopefully I'll manage to get it all working (fingers crossed), or I may be on the forums pleading for assistance later on tonight!
Anyway, looking forward to adventures in PDA land!
And Stevenator65 - your sig was particularly useful as I then followed the "did you VOTE" link to find a great thread on screen protectors, which I realise I've neglected to order. I shall vote once I've made my choice and got it installed...
Got the same deal as you, mine arrived today and is having it's first 8 hour feed as I type, should be ready about 9 pm!
I've also got a GPS coming, a brand new DEll BT unit from e-bay £72.00 inc p&p. Also ordered an 1 gb SD card from www.7dayshop.com, £22.00 inc p&p. (they also do cheap CF cards - maybe next month?)
BTW welcome to Cornwall, what part?, I'm SE, quite near Plymouth.

Astroman
Hi Astroman,
I finally started playing with the Axim at around 8.30pm last night. And generally it's great, I'm really pleased with it. Heck, Quake plays at a higher framerate that it ever did on PC! :) However, one thing I failed to do was check compatibility issues with CF-based GPS and tomtom 5, so at the moment I find myself with a nice little PPC that can't do what I mainly bought it for - navigate us from place to place! Never mind, I'm going to send the BC337 back on Monday, and replace it with the BT338 (unless anyone has any strong alternative recommendations!).
Hope you're enjoying your Axim. I also ordered the 1gb SD from 7dayshop, what a crazy price! They'll be giving them away in boxes of cornflakes soon... I've also got a 4gb Hitachi microdrive (I have two, for use with my digi SLR), which is being used to store all the d/l'ed games on!
We're going to be looking around the Helston/Lizard/Penzance region to move to - the further south the better, really.
