I was robbed!
Hi - I've had an X50v for a couple of years and have lurked on AximSite all that time. I got so used to having my pocketPC, it became a big part of my life.

Lost my job a couple of months ago, and found a job doing contract programming for a large company, so I'm still reeling from my "career modifcation" I set my x50v down for a few mins, and returned to find it missing!

I knew from the very start it was swiped, I went to the company lost and found and nothing. I'm devastated, it really makes me angry thinking about someone fondling my x50v with my name on it and all my stuff. I had a 1gb CF and 4gb SD - I had everything running just the way I wanted it. Fortunately, I didn't leave any confidential stuff on it, so I should be OK. I changed all my Internet passwords yesterday, JIC.

People that steal stuff like that have no idea how that makes someone feel. It's a hard feeling to get over.

I've consoled myself to knowing that I will never see it again. To make myself feel better, I bought another x50v on eBay from a reputable dealer with some accessories. Please don't tell me I should have got the x51v... it'll just hurt worse. I got a good price on it at $222 for x50v, case, 2 batteries, 1gb CF and stand, sw etc. It's been a while, so I wasn't checking the forums out, It has Win6 on this, was that a bad choice? I'm hoping not. Like I said, it was reactionary from losing it. I hope I didn't make a big mistake.

Hardware-wise I am missing the SD card and a nice case. I can't remember the brand SD I had, but it worked real well. Any thoughts on best SD to buy? I would be willing to upgrade to an 8gb if the price were right and I knew it would work.

I keep my programs on the 1gb CF and the media on the SD, any thoughts on buying 2 or more SD's with different media (music/movies/books) and swapping them? Is it a good idea, or just buy a big SD and call it good...

I learned my lesson, at a customer site, I now take only a single flashdrive. It was a hard lesson, but that's life. Since I am contracting, I have my own business, so I hope to call it a business loss and expense it at least. I'm going to keep my business stuff on it too. ;-)

Man I'm bummed! I need some encouragement.. and a virtual hug or two

Thanks for being there for me!

Here you go.

Having something stolen is awful but look on the bright side, it has made you post on one of the best sites on the web, instead of just lurking.
Welcome home.

As for your choice, the 50v is a great machine and often is more stable than the 51v.
WM6 works well on it also.
All in all a good decision.

You can get some pretty big cards now, but having a few smaller ones is good too.
Be very careful of Cards from ebay, lots of fakes.
I find it useful to keep all my cab files on a card that travels with me and an extra backup of my system kept separately, so that if it is lost or stolen I still have the option to restore my settings on a new device.
Have a look through the storage card forum, that should give you some good links to reputable sellers.

Enjoy your new toy, and all the best with your new business.

No question havng a well-loved device stolen is a horrible, horrible feeling. At the risk of seeming to trivialize far worse things, it really does leave you feeling violated. I lost a phone a couple years ago and understand how you feel completely.

Try to view this as a chance to relive the wonderful "New gadget" and to try new things, like WM6. Always sad to lose a device, but great fun to get new ones too. Enjoy it and good luck.

It is an awful feeling, I have been there. I kept switching from feeling violated and then thinking of some pretty violent things to do to the person, back and forth. I found beer helped(at night/before bed) and keep busy by day, but maybe that's just me. I hope you will be alleviated of grief knowing you have a replacement on the way. Think of it as a temporary suspension of use.
p.s. I have heard good thing about wm6 on an ax, they say it responds better

I say DEATH to the criminal! Probably some cretin who didn't even know what a PDA even is, let alone how to use it.

Monday - Replacement x50v arrived!
Came home today, and the x50v I bought from a gentleman in Washington State arrived. So far it looks and works great! Got it charging up and I am toying with WM6, and it does seem to be a very nice stable OS.

I haven't got a CF yet, and that is what I want to store my programs on, so I have to wait before re-installing.

In the meantime, what size and brand CF would you recommend? I had a 1gb before and for just storing programs it was way more than adequate... but if it's pretty cheap to go more, and the x50v will take a bigger CF, then why not? :-)

Along the same line, what options do I have for SD? I store media (music, ebooks, movies) on my SD. I had a 4Gb SD. Is there something better out there? What have people found that is working well for them?

I am getting this freaky feeling about leaving my stuff around, I was out in the park, and I felt worried about putting my camera down for fear I would lose it. :-)) I'm sure it will pass.

Any suggestions on cases? I got an aluminum RhinoSkin Case with the unit, haven't tried it yet - I was wondering if anybody has found an ideal case?

Thanks for all your words of encouragement guys. I appreciate it!

Well, I've tried no less than 5 different cases over the last year and a half +. I had (still have, but don't use) a RhinoSkin, but didn't like it because of the fact the lid opens to the side. IMO, a flip up lid is much easier to use. My favorite up until about 4 weeks ago was the Innopocket Magnum case. But after about a year of having it, the coating (paint?) started coming off like crazy and looking pretty terrible. It has saved my PDA from no less than four drops of about 3' - 4'. But in the last drop, part of the hinge broke away.

About 2 weeks ago I purchased my fifth different case- EBcases leather case. This is now my favorite of all the cases I've tried so far. I like it over the Innopocket because of the fact that if I drop my PDA again (hope THAT never happens again ), at least this case is soft and will cushion the drop a little more than the hard case. I also like the belt clip and pivot knob on the case much better than the one on the Innopocket (didn't trust it enough to use it). I now have my PDA clipped to my belt at all times.

Hope this helps!

Purchasing CF
I am in the process of figuring out which CF to buy as a replacement. I am impressed with the prices. I can purchase an A-Data 8gb for about $25 or a 2gb unit...

Does speed of the CF impact performance of the x50v or is the slowest CF still quite adequate. If CF speed is not an important consideration, I will get the 8gb. If speed is important, I will buy a faster, smaller CF.

My CF will be used to store all my programs, so they will be loading from there.

I plan on storing all my media on the SD, so I am going to get a larger SD for that.

What's been your experience - what CF should I buy? - Any recommendations or advice would be greatly appreciated!

The speeds of both the CF and SD cards are pretty much limited by the Ax.
Slow works fine in the Ax, but if you want to use them in something else, like a camera, then faster is better.
Also a faster card will transfer files faster in a card reader.
Be careful of large SD cards, the Ax doesn't natively support SDHC and most over 4gig are SDHC.
I can't remember just now if there is a patch to make the 50v work with SDHC, I know there is for 51v.
You could consider upgrading to WM6 because that does support SDHC, but that's another whole question.
CF you can go as large as you want, 64gig ones are getting cheaper. With a large CF you don't need to worry too much about SD cards.
Personally, I have a large CF that never leaves my Ax, except to move files back and forth, and a variety of SD and mini SD that I use in other things and put in the Ax to transfer photos etc to the CF for longer storage.
It all depends on how you use your device.

Getting back online
Thanks one and all for your help! My replacement Axim has arrived and is running WM6, an 8Gb A-Data CF is in the mail, and I am going to put my installs on it. I'm going to wait until next month to get the SD, but am hoping to get a nice sized SD for media.

I was really surprised how much flash memory has come down in price. It's really sad that Dell is still not making the Axim line. IMHO, it was a great product - one of the best. I realize that smartphones and the like are the trend. But it is hard to beat the screen and the versatility of the X50v.

I learned my lesson.... no more pocketPC's at customer sites, I keep all my documentation and tools on a single flashdrive. :-)

But I'm feeling a lot better, thanks to you guys - You're the best!
