I'm new around here. I don't have an Axim yet, nor have I ever owned or even used any PDA before. I am however purchasing an Axim very soon. I'm considering the X50v.
I used to be a bit of a gadget freak, but PDA's just seemed a little too nerdy, even for me. I was considering getting a GPS, since I do quite a bit of travelling and seem to get lost often. However, I didn't want just a GPS. I wanted a handheld that had Wifi and Blue Tooth, a media player and had GPS capabilites or a GPS add-on.
So I was comparing the Tungsten C, the IPAQ, and the Axim X50v. The Axim just seemed like the best value. It also seems like most owners are happier with their Axims than IPAQ owners. Besides being way overpriced, I've heard a lot about IPAQ's LCDs cracking or breaking.
So, I'm definitely going with the X50v, but just can't decide from where. Dell wants like $499 for them, but I see plenty new ones on Ebay for roughly $385. Is there any benfit from purchasing directly from Dell, or am I better off saving some money by purchasing it elsewhere? I need to save as much as possible, because I am going to want a GPS kit.
The only cons I've read about the Axims are the short battery life, and I've also been told to not buy one until they ship with the 2005 OS.
A few questions? How durable are the Axims? I'm a bit clumsy, and I'm sure I'll drop it within the first hour of having it. Also, are there any known hacks? Nothing illegal...I just like little tips and tricks that help you get the most out of things.
So, can anyone direct me to a dealer who is cheap but also reputable? Also, any reccommendations on a GPS kit?
If you look around the sales/coupons posted here for the x50v, you can get one for $370-$400
Additionally, you will want:
the magnesium hard case, $38
a 1gb SD card ($70-$90)
bluetooth GPS ($150-$200)
A cell phone with bluetooth and an unlimited data plan (most providers have a $25.00/month plan)
Software to suit your needs, see my sig for some good ones

Welcome to the site! Many started here before buying their Axim. Eventualy they all came to their senses and made the buy. :D
Quite a few here bought their Axim off ebay and as long as you get it from a reputable dealer then you should be safe. My preference is to buy directly from Dell for a little more convenience and assurance that I will get what I paid for.
If you are hoping to get a better deal directly from Dell just keep an eye out for a sale or discount coupon.

LOL. While you're at it, get yourself a new wardrobe, some jewelry and maybe a new car. . Good suggestions, but don't confuse the guy, he hasn't even decided on a PDA yet.

The only thing that can be said is that a good case and a good screen protector will go far in protecting your device. The rest of those items will just help extend the device's usefulness, however it would be best if you discovered what you want to do with the device first.
The screen protector is rather cheap and if you ask around here, you can get some recommendations for a good one. A case is more and you have more of a choice there. For instance, I have a soft case for my device with a belt clip which works out very well for what I use my device for.
It should be noted that if you order from Dell, you can get complete care coverage on your device that will ensure replacement of the device if an accient happens. However, as always, the best case scenario is to never run into an accident in the first place. *knock on wood*, I have never had to use the complete care replacement for my device.
I know, these devices are quite a bit of money... however take some comfort in knowing that these devices tend to last a long time and will continue to serve for as long as you want (* as long as you recharge it, * replacement might be necessary if you want a "new" toy later on... :)).

I was browsing Dells website, and in the Small Business section, they have the X50v for $399 and free shipping. I am trying to locate a coupon code to bring the price down even further. If I can get the price down to $375, then I'll definitely order it direct from Dell, for piece of mind if nothing else.
What would you reccommend...the soft case or the rhino case? I think for now, I'll just get the PDA and a nice case.

If you are doing any form of media, then you/he will need a memory card
He said he is clumsy and will probabl drop it, therefore a hard case is suggested, and most people have stated the magnesium is the most functional.
He stated Wifi and Bluetooth, and a bluetooth cell and dataplan makes it even more functional, if he has no cellphone, then it is something to keep in mind, if not then not, but there is always ebay

I have a few small SD and CF cards lying around. I figure those will be enough to hold me over for a little while.

I'll definitely be getting some kind of protector. I've heard about "rhino" cases. How are they?

I have a cell phone, a Motorola V300, however it does'nt not have blue tooth. What does a cell phone have to do with anything?
