Okay. First of all, are you connecting your pocket pc, right away?
What you need to do is delete the unknown device, uninstall and reinstall ActiveSync. Then, do not connect your pocket pc to your computer until you are prompted to do so.
Open up ActiveSync on your computer. Select File > Connection Settings > Connect. A wizard will prompt you through the remaining steps.

I've noticed that the actual problem is an error-message "Unrecognized USB Device", so the problem appears either hardware (USB) or software (Cradle software or drivers).
Accordingly, I would consider checking the hardware first.
Hardware 1.) Do you have other USB connected devices, and are they *all* working ok?
2.) Are you plugging-in directly into a USB connector on the host machine, or into a replication port (or hub)?
If you do not have other USB devices, or you do but they are also not working, then you will want to consider re-installing your USB drivers for your motherboard. These are generally lumped-in with the "chipset" drivers for your Motherboard, so re-install them and report back.
Obviously, if you are currently plugged into a Hub, I would recommend plugging directly into the back of your computer; even if you must disconnect other USB equipment (at least for the duration of testing).
However, if you have other working USB devices, and you are plugged directly into your host machine (and not a hub), then we'll need to look at your software next.
Software
For software, I would repeat an earlier suggestion, but with a special step in the middle (well, steps 2-4) 1.) Remove/Uninstall your ActiveSync software. 2.) Delete the Activesync directory entirely. 3.) Empty your Recycle bin to ensure the folder and remaining files are removed. 4.) Reboot your desktop machine. 5.) Re-install ActiveSync (version is your choice).
I first got a message "Found New Hardware", then a moment later "Your New Hardware is installed and ready to use". A moment after that the wizard quit and I got the familiar "USB Device Not Recognized"
Anything else to try? It feels like I'm getting closer.
Thank you, as well, Elrendhel. I did EXACTLY as you said, as well.
Hardware - I am connecting directly to my PC and I have another USB device connected as well that is working perfectly.
Software - I did as you said, following instructions exactly. Same result. First it said "Found New Hardware", then "USB device ready" but then the message disappeared and was replaced by "USB Device not Recognized"
Julie asked this question previously (post #6), but I never saw an answer: Have you tried hooking this cradle and PDA to another computer and experienced the same problem?
I am beginning to think that your PDA's cradle connector may be defective.
Is there a chance that you could obtain another PDA of the same brand and model to try out in your cradle thru a friend/family member, or through a local store?
If another PDA worked fine in your existing setup, then that would be confirmation that some aspect of your PDA (the connector, or the mainboard itself) is the problem. At this point, I would recommend sending the unit out for repair to PocketPCTechs, one of our favorite companies (and also a long-time supporter of our site).
I generally sync to two computers, at home and at work. I've been having the same problem with both of them so it is reasonable to assume that it is either the connector on the PDA or the board. I don't know where I would get another PDA to try it with but I'll look around.
Assuming I send it out for repair, do you have any idea what a repair could cost? As I mentioned in an earlier post, I am happy with the PDA and am not looking to buy a new one but if the cost of the repair is almost as much as buying a new unit, it wouldn't make sense to repair it.
Assuming it is a hardware problem, it is hard to know how much it might cost to repair. You can contact Pocket PC Techs and find out from them, what they thing. If you send it to them, I think they will charge a small fee to determine exactly what is wrong with it. If you agree to have it repaired, the assessment fee will be applied to the repair.
Of course, you should first test to make sure it is not your cradle that it is the problem.
