Display Quality

Hi

I'm a newbie with very little understanding of this subject.

Will a screen size of 4" 640x480 260k TFT give a better or worse image than the ipod touch.

I'm trying to decide if a touch plus a standalone satnav is better than a pda with (bought seperatly) gps (Ipaq 214). Main use would be as a media player and organiser.

I have posted as I am very unsure the best route to go down. However I am worried about how small the ipod touch screen is (despite only a 1/2" smaller than on the ipaq I think it may be better for viewing) and that come October a 2nd gen machine may be out.

The HP210 will have twice the resolution of the ipod Touch which will give a clearer picture with more detail. (i.e. The HP210 screen will be better)

The ipod Touch comes with up to 16GB of (nonexpandable) flash memory built in.

The HP210 won't come with much built in, but with 2 memory slots you can expand the memory as far as your budget will take you. For example you could put in a 32GB CF for $160 (Newegg.com - A-DATA 32GB Compact Flash (CF) Flash Card Model SPEEDY CF 32G - Retail) and a 16GB SDHC for $80 (Newegg.com - A-DATA 16GB Secure Digital High-Capacity(SDHC) Flash Card Model TurboSD SDHC 16G - Retail). This would give 3 times as much memory as the iPod Touch.

You will be able to swap out memory cards on the fly to further expand your memory in the HP210.

When larger CF or SDHC cards are made you will be able to add more memory to your HP210.

You will need to buy a new iPod Touch in order to upgrade its memory.

The HP210 will have a user replaceable battery allowing you to carry multiple batteries or replace an old failing battery. The iPod Touch doesn't.

We don't yet know what battery life on the HP210 will really be like when watching video's or listening to music, but for a single new battery, the iPod Touch will probably be better.

The iPod Touch has a better user interface.

The HP210, with free add on software like TCPMP, has much much better CODEC support.

Speaking of add on software, there is really no comparison. the HP210 already has many many many programs available, many of them free. The iPod Touch may have some someday. This makes the HP210 much more flexible.

The web browser on the iPod Touch is probably better than anything available for the HP210.

The HP210 will be much better at PIM as an organizer.

You can do much more with an HP210.

The iPod Touch "Just Works"

For your usage case though, I would recommend looking at an HP310 also. It has a better screen than either of these.

the 210 screen can display 18bit color plus the screen is LED backlit which means less power than the other backlighting and hopefully uniformity

I've seen an Axim X51v (640x480) and Touch together. The Ax has better resolution but the Touch display looked far superior. Images looked deeper, more crisp and seem to have more color. I don't really understand it but the Touch's display just looked a lot better. I suspect the IPhone is the same.

The moral of the story is, compare units side by side if you can and don't make your purchase purely based upon specs. Get to an Apple store and play with a Touch if you can.

Actually, the moral of the story is that everyone has a preconceived notion of what is best, and the choice that they will make is based more upon them than the actual product. . The problem with display quality is that it is never approached scientifically, and everyone has their own idea of what a quality display is. That's why they sell HD TV sets from $200 to $20,000 in the same size range. Compare and find what display is best to you, otherwise you won't be as you'll always question yourself.

I have viewed movie trailers on both my x50 and my iPOD classic 80. While the display seems better on the iPOD, the screen on the AX is much bigger. I can't speak for the quality on the HPs. Like mentioned above, memory can be added to a PDA while the iPODS are locked in to one maximum value. The upside of an iPOD is battery time. PDAs are about 4 - 5 hours max. iPODS are up in the 20 -25 hours.

BTW - Welcome to Aximsite. Lots of good ppl and info here. Enjoy!

If i'm not mistaken the Ipod touch/Iphone's screen supports 262,000 colors while the Axim only supports 65,000 colors. That why the images have more color.

The Ipaq 210 supports a 262k screen so image quality should be comparable to the Iphone.

My stock battery (1100mAH) gets about 2 - 3 hours. From the posts I've read here the ppl with 2200mAH batteries get about 5 - 6 hours max. Compared to the iPOD's 20 - 30, it's not even close.

I'm not saying I'd recommend the iPOD. Just giving the person some food for thought. One of the biggest complaints I read in here is how short the battery life is in their PDAs. Ppl who are used to cell phones tend to think in days vice hours of use.

Everybody has an opinion and that's mine.

I have no experience with a 2200mAH which is why I was wondering, thanks for the info.

the ipaq 110 vs the 210 has very similar internals for performance

the ipaq 110 can do 4 hours watching high quality DVD movies the ipaq 210 is 12.5% larger but with a 2x larger battery so it can watch high quality DVD movies for 7 hours?
