Fast charge vs slow charge?

Under power settings, under the USB tab, it lets you choose fast charge or slow charge...

So besides the speed at which it charges, what is the difference? Does it have an effect on battery life?

For many pocket pcs, the slow charge sustains the existing level of charge. So if you are using the pocket pc while it is in slow charge mode, you could be using up more battery power than the what is being restored to the pocket pc.

I never use the slow charge and don't really see why it's even there. In fact, I prefer to recharge my IPAQs by plugging them directly into AC power because I think they recharge faster and get a better charge - I found that my battery never got to 100% when USB charging.

As Julie said, a fast charge is better if your device is powered ON, but I think the problem with this is that USB ports may not be able to provide enough power . Perhaps the slow charge option allows you to protect your ports?

I believe this is correct. I think that unpowered hubs, i.e., those that draw their power from their parent USB port rather than from an AC adapter, must share that power amongst all their ports. Fast charge may try to draw too much power in that one port and adversely affect other devices on the hub. May also be true on older PCs' USB posts.

i have always used fast charge on my 4700. its not really very fast at all... definitely slower than the ac adaptor. i think Julie is right the "slow' option should be dropped.

in NiCad batterys if u charge fast it charges much faster but doesnt hold as long as slow and degrades battery life cycle alot so it could be he same with litium ion

miniusb is where the option applies

This should only be a problem with lithium ion batteries when the charge rate is greater than the battery capacity. If you have a 1000 mha battery and put a 1000 mha or less charge, there shouldn't be any impact. The USB port puts out less than this .

Put more and there could be some fun. Fire anyone?
