I'm very close to purchasing an iPAQ 210 and most people seem to like them with the exception of the fact that...
1. Need a lot of force to operate touch screen
2. Headphone jack on the bottom of device
3. Speaker volume too soft (isn't the 210 supposed to have 2 speakers, I know one is on the back but where is the other one?)
IMO a tighter touch screen (harder to press) is a good thing as my HX4700 shat itself as dust and stuff easily found it's way under the gaps at the edge of the screen.
But overall how do you guys find the 210 stacks up to the mighty 4700? I know the 4700 had it's issues but overall I was very satisfied with it with only the touch pad and touch screen failure (after 1.5 years) being the things that pissed me off...
I think my 4700 was brighter in intensity then the 210. The speed was about the same (with Russian WM6 ROM) execpt when it goes into the solw down mode to update the memory store. The 210 does not suffer from that issue. WM6 is nice but other then support to Office 2007 I saw very little improvement from 2003 SE on the 4700. If you need WM6 the hacked ROMs do provide it and do work they also still have the Credent security software which the new 210 and 110 do not have.
give me a mod to put a d-pad in instead of the touch pad and i will take my 4700 to the grave with me. games suck on the 4700 but it is great for everything else. action games i mean. sudoku and crosswords etc also great. can you get the 210 into vga mode like oz-vga/se-vga on the 4700?

one too many times dropped
I got a Piel Frama case for it, which was lovely, but which had a poorly designed belt clasp
the 210 has more memory which is a huge advantage
the screen seems as lovely if not more so
I never used the touchpad on the 4700, so the 210 is a better design for me
input with handwriting seems significantly better with the 210
wireless is MUCH better with the 210
major disappointment with the 210:
HP no longer bundles much in the way of software & in particular no longer makes a backup program available
given that the newest version of ActiveSynch does not allow for backing up to your hard drive, I think this a MAJOR deficit with the 210
I bought a third party back up application, but for a PDA a back up program should be included as this is an absolute necessity
I never had HX4700
but today I have chance to use slingplayer on 211
the video on the screen simply blows me away!
one of my all time favorite PDA
32GB storage is sweet!
Also, in answer to Spud42's question, I could not get ozVGA or seVGA to work on the 211. It was trivial to work it on the 4700. I assume the difference is due to the different operating systems (2003SE on the 4700, WM6 on the 211). However, browsing on the Web suggests that people seem to be able to get true VGA to work out on WM6, so maybe it's possible.
cheers glyman. it is obvious that if my 4700 dies then a 210 is a certainty.has anyone tried GPS software on the 210? how does it look??

Did you try my OzVGA hacks? They DO work on WM5/WM6. I've thoroughly elaborated on them in the x51v forum, in the sticky thread.
But did anyone really support the GPU in the axims

Concerning the sound issues, the good folks at Brighthand were able to come up with a solution that works extremely well for me. Simply take the sound you need, like a reminder (or you can also get your own reminder sound) and use Window's built-in Sound Recorder program and just keep selecting the option to increase the sound by25%. 4 Times of clicking it will make the sound literally twice as loud on the same speaker. It works. I've downloaded a zelda sound for my reminders and pumped it up so high that I can hear it very well even stuffed in the case in my pocket. I even used this method to increase the voice prompts on iGuidance.
But to get back on topic, I've never used the 4700 so I can't compare. But I will say that I really love my 210. Everyone who I show it too gets impressed. Plus it's nice to know that I have the latest gadget with a warrenty. :-)
