I have no "choice"
Unfortunately, I thnk my beloved x50v bricked itself (really I don't know how)
so after annoying you all and going back ad forth, I think I guess i have "no choice" but to make the dive.
Questions:
can the charge/sync USB - Unit cord work with the wall units and car units to charge from the wall and car?
is there a dedeicated screen saver for the 210/11/13/14?
is it worth paying the $50 more through HP site to get the cradle? Anyone here with the cradle?
Thanks for any and all input

I use the A-B USB cable from my camera. Works like a champ.
Brando has a dedicated screen saver, and Boxwave will have one in about 3 weeks. From what I've read on the forums, those are the best two.
I don't know anyone yet who has a cradle. I don't see a need for it for myself.
Hope that helps.

I have a car charger and it works like a charm.
And quite neccesary too, for road navigation.
It is really a USB to miniUSB cable, that connects to a chargerplug. I'm not completely sure about the specs, but I assume the output to USB is standard.
I have no cradle and I have no need for them at all. For that money I'd buy a nice case or a carkit.

thanks all
I have a nice car kit which I invested in when I got the Axim. I am just happy that I don't have to get a new one!

One caution on the USB charging port. I use my 210 for GPS, with a BT GPS. With the BT on, the screen on, the CPU charging hard to do the gps routing and voice prompting stuff, the USB current limits set by HP of 200mA are not enough to keep up. The battery slowly discharges and the charging light flickers. If I stop routing, just use it as a map device, the USB current is enough to keep the LED lit fully, but the battery still slowly discharges. I'm looking for a 5V, 2A car adapter with a barrel plug to use the little adapter that came with the 210.

Jakerich,
I did just that two days ago, but my 214 was charging while navigating on BT. I'm quite positive it was not discharging, as I wouldn't have been able to make the trip as the battery was almost dead when I started the journey. Any chance you're using the original HP powerplug?

joepie, I'm not sure what you mean by "original HP powerplug." I used a short USB-miniUSB cable that came with the cradle from Arkon. Arkon says the socket output is rated for 1.4A, but according to the HP documentation, the limitation on the USB inbound port is 200mA in the high mode, 100 mA in the low mode. In other words, the 210 will only draw those levels, no matter what the rating of available power may be on the mini-USB pins. What I am going to do next is get a 5.4v, 2A wall unit that has a barrel connector to fit the external adapter from HP and use an inverter in my car to get a full high-current charge on the unit for GPS use.

Jake Rich,
I am not sure how that will help the situation...if the unit only draws the 200mA - then how will having more from the source change the matter?
Please also post link for the abovementioned car port for 2A.....
thanks

Hi JakeRich,
I'm sorry, I'm not at the same tech level as you are :o.
I just happen to have a car adapter for the 210, and it is made by HP.
Though I'm not aware of the output of the charger, I just know that it really charges the pda while navigating. Today it went from 24% to 46% orso after a 40 min.
Perhaps it makes a difference which navigation software you use. I'm currently running Navigon 6 but have TomTom available as well.

...exactly, or almost, my idea for readaptation of an external battery pack by ebay seller addonsworld, which I bought for my old hx2400. Its fundamentally a plastic case where you insert 4 AA batteries, which has an extruding cable to be plugged inside the PDA as if it was an external charger. Having it a normal female USB connector with an additional usb2pda adapter, I simply used a USB2USBmini adapter to make it fit the 214. I would think that 4 2000mAh rechargeable batteries by energizer would output a sufficient current to hold the consumption of the 214 plus some more for charging it, but that's not the case. I also noticed that USB charging from PC was equally slow. That's why I may try to use a ripped USB cable to solder a barrel plug to the wires in order to stick it the the in-the-box charging adapter.

I was using OnCourseNavigator 6. I'd say that the USB port just barely held on. The light flickered if I was getting routing, went solid orange if I just followed along. The difference is the CPU having to do more when doing routing, speaking, etc. Since the reason I have GPS is for routing, not following along, for me the USB port isn't adequate. Today I used this:
High Power Car Charger for Pocket PC or Bluetooth GPS (5V @ 2A) - Power Solution
and the 24-pin adapter and it stayed solid, even turned green after a while. Sweet.

Using the 24 pin port bypasses the USB limitation. Having a good solid converter and using that adapter that came with the unit worked very well.

That's the link to a similar charger to the one I have.

To be clear, did you use the iPAQ adapter that semsons sells, or the one that comes in the box with the 211? This looks like a great solution, but I want to be sure I have the correct adapter for it. Thanks!
