I'd prefer PDair over this one because you can access the screen, buttons, memory card without removing the unit

Uh...I don't think you're talking about the belt case I'm using (part #459091-001. It's made of fine leather and the belt clip, while it does use a spring clip, it doesn't seem at all cheap or of inferior quality and it is very secure. If anything, it's sometimes difficult to remove from my belt. But it has never, ever even given me the slightest indication that it would ever break or fall off unexpectedly. That's to it's credit, because I can't tell you how many of those plastic belt clips for metal cases I've broken over the years (3-5 in as many years, each time resulting in a heart-wrenching crash onto the floor, ground or pavement. I'm not at all displeased with the quality for the price I paid, and am happy with my purchase.
By holding the device horizontally instead of vertically, it avoids the kind of stress that a vertical mount will exert on the clip when, say, it slides around to the front and I lift my leg to climb over something or swat down to pick something up, causing the whole assembly to bind, always pinch my stomach, and sometimes break the plastic belt clip. Also, since it mounts horizontally, I find it never gets into a situation when I would have wanted it to swivel on a post. I used to be an avid fan of the vertical cases, but replacing all those clips has broken me of the habit.
Oh, and I seem to be able to hear the alarms sounding with it inside the case without too many exceptions. Of course, I'd still suggest testing the sound volume of the sound bit you'll use for reminders with it in the case to make sure it's loud enough (and re-mix it with Windows Recorder if it's not).
That's my 4 pennies (that's 2 cents after 5 years of inflation).:)
