Aximsiteactivesyncicon Transferring programs and data to 210

I'm still learning my way around the PDA world and I need help! I have used the iPaq 2795 for a few months but got the iPaq 210 because I like the bigger screen. I have several medical programs and texts that I want to transfer to the 210 as well as replace the old desktop with a new laptop. The new laptop will be my main computer to sync with the 210. I'll be going from Windows XP to Vista. What is the best way to make the transfers? Will I encounter problems with the 210 going from XP to Vista? Any advice will be appreciated!!! Thanks.

I believe you have the potential to hit some heavily copy protected software. When going from XP to Vista you will be changing from ActiveSync to Windows Mobile Device Center. If you have used cabs to bypass ActiveSync you'll find programs are stored in new locations under Vista. I would strongly suggest that you get a new Notebook with Bluetooth (version 2.0 with EDR at the minimum). Without knowing the programs and the level of copy protection they may have it is hard to say, just what you will experience. I suggest install on the 210 and confirming they are working before removing from the old device. Also this is an excellent time to check for new updated versions of programs you have.

At the minimal you'll want to write down all passwords, all activation keys, your name exactly as it is listed on the current PDA in Owner Information. You'll want to find all install programs for the PC to reinstall the software under Vista. Then I would recommend reinstalling everything through the new Vista notebook. I personally would not try to back up and restore programs from one device to another, as this can not be done without restoring the registry as well, and IMHO this can often create future problems. I would also soft reset the 210 after each new program is installed.

I second that opinion. I bricked my first 210 attempting that very thing. Definately install (versus copy) ALL programs you intend to use on the iPAQ. It takes longer, but it is time well spent.

In case you doubt me, here's the thread detailing my trama: http://www.aximsite.com/boards/ipaq-...axim-ipaq.html. The 210 is particularly difficult to reset to factory settings (you have to be an octopus or have a friend help you), so it's better not to get yourself into that situation.

If you are uninstalling on the old device and if in reinstalling on the new one it you get a message about having to enter the activation code and the old codes don't work, contact the vendor about transferring the license. Most vendors have a policy to cover changing from one PDA to another. Some charge a small fee, some don't.
