one thing i did that helped me a bit was aligning the screen both in portrait and landscape (had read that somewhere). i don't know why but it seems much better for me now. might be worth a try.

What do you exactly mean... like, aligning first in portrait, then switch to landscape by holding OK, then realign in landscape, then go back in portrait and have better touchscreen behaviour?

I tried doing just that. So far, it does seem to have helped, the touchscreen responds better than before.

Did not work for me, at all, it messed up the alignment to a level even worse (if that is even possible) than what I remember it was back then.
I have now realigned following my alignment-procedure-fooling method, and the freehand input mode in notes gives almost 100% precise feedback like it did back then.

I've tried both methods. Your alignment fooling method worked much better for me than aligning in portrait and landscape modes.
