has anyone encountered low volume on his ipaq212?
I wonder if anyone has encountered this problem: the volume on my unit seems extremely low despite setting it on to the max.

I think it's not a problem...instead the default setting is indeed to low even you max it out
Mine behave the same way

If you look at most of the "High End" HP iPAQs you will find that most reviewers have acknowledged that the audio from the internal speaker is to low to hear reliably in a noise environment. This normally is referenced when there are comments about using it with a GPS.

And we're all hoping that HP will be able to resolve the problem in software and give us a patch some time soon!
No problem with volume from the headphones...

The only problem with that wishful thinking is HP has not done this in the past, and historically delvers an HP iPAQ with very poor internal speaker volume. HP does not acknowledge the "low" volume as a problem, or they would not continue year after year to deliver iPAQs with low volume.

one of the solutions is to use bluetooth a2dp speakers
the bluetooth works well on 211, and less likely to interfere wifi operation
the speaker (on the back) is 0.001% more than useless

when watching a movie or listening to music, use coreplayer and crank up the pre-amp volume in the settings, works great then. Still makes a cruddy alarm clock though.
Also I find the bluetooth stereo on this to be quite flat and almost tiny, and I've tried my same bt headphones on my treo andthey sound great.

One of the other things that you can do is upload the sound (WAV) files to your desktop, and use a desktop tool, like Sound Recorder, to re-mix the sound at a higher volume level. Then you can download the louder version of the file to the iPAQ in its original directory. I also stay away from certain sound bytes as they are just to quiet to serve for reminder notifications. When I'm not in the office ("out and about") I have my reminders set to use a Foghorn sound byte I have. That's usually loud enough to just detect it on a fairly noisy public bus and loud enough to hear across the my entire (mostly quiet) house 3 rooms away. I'm attaching that sound file here in case you want to see if that's loud enough for you.

yes it's very strange that the volume behaves this way. I know the core player allows the volume to be cranked up so it helps. however, other players like youtubeplay, gsplayer and even the windows media do not have this feature. perhaps someone has come across a utility that allows us to crank up the volume permanently. if the core player can do that then it's not the hardware per se but the software. sounds logical?

Never quite as low as what they implemented on the 210 though... :(
the 4700 was much louder (relatively speaking)
