How to Dim the Battery/WiFi LEDs
If you've tried using WiFi with your device in the dark (such as when driving using GPS software connected to a Bluetooth GPS receiver), you're well-aware of how bright those LEDs are in total darkness. This is a Vermonter's "back woods" sort of resolution to the problem (versus a computer hacker's solution).
- I simply cut a very narrow strip of regular old copier paper (preferably less than 20lb weight) into a 1/16" x 5/16" strip.
- Using tweezers, I rounded the ends of the strip (for a sleeker look).
- Set the strip aside on a draft-free table.
- Using tweezers (to avoid messing up the sticky side of the tape with fingerprints), now cut a strip of cellophane tape (the clear, glossy type, not the translucent kind - I'd also recommend the Scotch brand) into a strip that is 1/2" x 5/32". Round the corners off to make it look sleeker and prevent the corners from catching later on.
- Carefully center the tape over the paper strip by lowering it down slowly over the paper until the static charge picks up the paper. Do not press the tape onto the paper strip as this will mess up the sticky side of the tape on the table (and reduce its stickiness).
- Center the tape and paper over the LEDs and press. You're Done!!
I installed mine about 3 months ago and it shows no sign at all that it will be falling off anytime soon. It's almost unnoticibly different than the original design and the LEDs are visible in all but the brightest sunlight. And it cuts the brightness at least by half, so reading at night or using the GPS for night driving is no longer a blinding experience.
