My Ipaq 211 has lost the ability to connect to any open wifi network. The wifi utility displays available networks both open and secured but when I attempt to connect to it says connecting then fails; this happens regardless of signal strength. There is no error message. I tried a hard-reset but that had no effect so I tried installing the driver update from HP still nothing. So I called HP and they are sending a self-addressed box for repairs.

My question is what could cause a my device to be able to see an open network but not be able to connect?

first guess is that you might have a saved site with the same name, using encryption.

But that is just a guess and probably a poor one

I deleted all saved ssid info. So that's unlikely. But the box there sending should arrive on monday.
