Freezing on power button press

I was pondering whether to post here or not regarding this... but today happened the strangest of things.
Before, with the device turned off, it would happen (seldom) that pressing the power button to turn it off had no result at all, no matter how many times I tried, so I had to press the reset button to let it start.
But just now, with the device turned on, I tried turning it off via the power button, and not only it won't turn off, but it ceased to be responsive in any way, it simply is showing the today screen with backlight on.
I pressed the reset button and it started rebooting normally.
It's like something is off with the "hibernation" of the system at power button press, either one way or the other.

That has happened to me before as well. Sometimes, my HP 210 will hang, and the only way to recover is a soft-reset (power button has no effect). Thank goodness this happens maybe only once a week.

I've seen this behavior on occasion with my hx2495b that is until I reloaded everything and left spb Pocket Plus off the machine. Those today screen add-ins seem to cause some intermittent problems. Since then I've had zero issues with startup, shutdown or synchronization.

The only today plugin I use is the freeware todayagenda, and I can't say it was associated with that program, since I go way back with that, on my previous turned in devices, and it was ok there. It just happens once in a while with this new substitution device.

What I discovered today is that, apart from the fact that one of the two original batteries I own can't make the device start as it turns itself off as soon as the reboot windows screen closes... is that the notes application was behaving really weird, it kept opening a certain file as soon as I started it, instead of listing the notes on the device, and however I tried to close that file, it led to the device hanging and needing a reboot. This, no matter how many times I soft resetted. Then i tried modifying the file and saving, it hung, but at the next reboot the notes app opened regularly, and the file was apparently saved correctly. One other thing that always happened was the wifi being turned on everytime after a soft reset, and after soft resetting without the SD card inserted, this behaviour ceased, either resetting with or without the SD inside... Yeah ok probably a hard reset is in order... but what the heck?? I didn't install any new application in this device nor made significant changes since longer than I can remember, and all the use I ever make of it is still calendar, excel, handybase, calculator, notes, tcpmp, contacts, tomtom, and has been like this since long... surely way before this behaviour first appeared, so, again WTF.

That sort of stuff used to happen to me ALL THE TIME with Pocket PC 2003 (the version of Windows Mobile before it was called Windows Mobile). Knock on wood, that stopped happening as soon as I migrated to a Windows Mobile 5-based devise (the Axim).

Now, one personal behavior that changed a little for me with the advent of Windows Mobile 5 was that I greatly reduced what I loaded onto the Today screen. Honestly, I don't think the problems were with the Today screen plug-ins per se, but rather with the Today screen itself. Try putting only the minimum of stuff (say 2 of the most critical items - or even nothing at all) on your today screen and see if the behavior goes away. Just a thought...

Before even trying the today screen thing (anyhow the today screen has been the same for ages now), I narrowed the problem a lot. Didn't get (apparently) problems turning on the device anymore, the power on button always leads to the ipaq coming back to life... what has happened is that the Note application ALWAYS leads to failure. You can open notes and edit them, but any attempt of closing or minimizing the application leads to the device hanging and not responding to anything but reset switch.
