Battery always reads 100%

I just bought a new non genuine batttery (ebay) cause the old one has done its day and was loosing charge to fast for my liking.
When I got the new one in it read half flat, no surprises there so I charged it up and all seemed fine until I noticed one day it read about 88% charged, and the next day it read 94% charged
As far as I am aware they loose charge after time, not gain it.
I turned the machine on the other day, it read someting like 66% but then a few seconds after that the message poped up saying that the battery was flat and I should charge before loosing data
Now all it does is read 100% I have had it off the charge for the last several days and now I turn it on, leave it on for a few minutes it still reads 100%. But when I put it on the charge the light flashes and it says on the screen it's charging.
I have no idea what the battery level is anymore, surely a battery can not play havock that much?
The battery I bought is a 3.7v 1000ma, and the origional is a 3.7 900ma, should that make any difference?
Should I just put the old one back in and get another battery?
Any suggestions?

Did you try to condition it, forgive me if you have, I failed to completely read your post.
Drain it completely dead, charge it completely, drain it and then charge it again. Don't do this more than four times! Also check your PDA's battery indicator by using another battery that is known to work.

No I didn't condition it, does this matter?
I just put my old battery back in after a couple of weeks of being out of the pda and it is reading about 75% so the indicator is working fine, I think I will leave the old battery in and maybe get in contact with the seller of the new battery and tell them it is a dud...
