There is a ton of good freeware software titles out there. This site has a links page of some good sites. There are plenty more but this is a good start.

Yes it does. Most of the stuff I use is free. With the exception of couple of commercial apps, that I have to have.
If you're using Wifi, I heard if you subscribe to PCMag for a month(?) for $9.97 you are entitled to three downloads. PocketWinC (Wifi sniffer) is available free from there, as well as the desktop version. These are normally $20 products each, that can be grabbed for $9.97, a $30 savings.
Check out the trial first to see if it works with your Wifi card. It doesn't seem to work with mine (D-Link 650W).
