200mhz or 400mhz
Getting a used 3835 or a 3955, will the 200mhz speed diff really matter?

Thanks

For normal PIM functions, you will be OK. You should be OK listening to some music as well. Certain games and watching movies will suffer due to the slower speed.

You know whats weird though? My old ipaq 3650(200 mhz) rated higher on benchmarking tests than a lot of newer 400mhz machines.
I have not run across a game or app I can not run at full speed.

Are you running the Samsung processor?

Heheh, now I am a little confused. Certain processors run faster even at slower speeds?

Currently I am lookin at IPAQ 3950 with the PXA250 processor.

This one good?

I appreciate the quick feedback..kinda running on a time line

Thanks!!

Yes. It is just like the age-old Mac and PC comparison. Mac Processors are only about 1.2GHz but they are as fast as Intel and AMD 2.6GHz processors.

Same goes with PPCs. In the case of iPAQs, it also depends on what you are using them for. If you are paying anywhere near $300 for either 3850 or 3950, then I would suggest going on eBay and buying the 5455 like I have for only about $320 refurbished but still sealed. I love mine and I'm sure you will too.

Let us know what you decide and if you feel you made the right decision.

Ya I was looking around ebay myself. New to that too.

Besides 802.11b, is there any diff from a 3950 and a 54XX series?

Thanks

The fingerprint scanner, better record and volume button, nicer, slightly bigger screen, different joystick, removeable battery. That is quite a bit of new stuff.

And it goes beyond that. For example in the desktop world you have Intel and AMD processors. When looking at processors I found it is not all about mere CPU power but the max Bus speed that the CPU supports and what it is configured for.

Take for example that latest Axim X5 PPCs versus the iPAQ 2215. Both processors are XScale 400MHz PXA255 CPU's. But Dell has decided to max the Bus speed on the processor to 99MHz. HP is running theirs at 200MHz. So in a flat out speed test the 2215 will outperform the Axim X5. The advantage Dell has in limiting the processor Bus speed to 99MHz allows for builtin autoscaling of the CPU. The 2215 does not have autoscaling since HP runs theirs at 200MHz.

Lesson is that not only one thing factors into changing the speed or performance of a computer, laptop, PDA, or pretty much anything. There are many factors to consider that will change the performance, especially in electronics.

Good thing I got you guys to help

If I go with the 3950..with the 400 mhz, is there a problem changing the batteries..or do they cost half the pda price?

Seems like changing batteries in 5400 much easier..so im guessing they cheaper too.

I read that the display chip was better in 3X series..for movies and such..any thoughts on that?

I plan on useing this with a external sleeve for pcmia cards. I want to use wireless packsniffers and wi-fi parts. I know the 5400 has built in wi-fi but the chip set is not compatable with Netstumbler.

Id like the system to be usefull long as posible, for the cash. Im kinda hesitant getting higher priced 5400 series when MS reports new technology comin out and with smartphones etc.

Thanks

J.

5400 and 3900 have the same graphics.

The battery is not changeable at all ont he 3900 series. The entire unit is sealed in one case. The 5400 series is all sealed except that the battery is easily removable.

You can buy the same sleeves for the 3900 as the 5400,but if Netstumbler is that important to you, then you aren't really left with the 5400 option.

It all depends on what your needs are.
