Ipaq 3630 upgrade to PPC 2002
Hi all,

I'm quite new to the wonderful Ipaq's world and as I have now an old Ipaq 3630 that was given to me, I would like to know how I can upgrade from the installed pocket pc 2000 version to the pocket pc 2002 version.
I have read somewhere that this can be done with a CD offered by Compaq but can't find this program anywhere ...
Does someone know where I could download this upgrade ?
(I have already searched on Compaq/HP 's site .... but couldn't find this upgrade... )
Thanx for any reply
Thomas.

once you upgrade to this, you need to go to HP and get all the other 2002 updates. You will end up with PPC2002 EUU3 and the unit should be quite stable and capable.

please be aware however that the 36xx series had a very small ROM so no cool consumer apps like Media Player can live in ROM. for that you had to have at least a 24meg ROM. However, for outlook syncing you can hardly beat it. We use them for Exchange Activesync at work and they make dandy PDAs.

I took the plunge and upgraded my old original spec h3630 to PPC2002 and am well impressed. Look and feel are the same as WM2003 (nonSE) so that makes for a common functional paradigm, which is of great benefit even to a techie like myself.

I cant say that USB support is any faster or better - just feels the same to me. But thats no bad thing, it could have been worse!

Compatibility with my existing apps on the h3630 has persisted. I am able to run the Navman GPS software and the D-Link WiFi card drivers work also. Full functionality to the previous set-up has been maintained.

The whole exercise to backup the original OS, install the PPC2002 and restore my apps and data took around 2-1/2 hours. I did other "stuff" while I was waiting for the lengthy parts of the procedure to complete.

So, all in all, not a bad few hours work. Now to back the whole thing up!

The only difference between a 3630 and a 3635 is that a 3635 is purchased directly from HP and the 3630 you get in a retail store. The upgrade is for all 3600 series units. The actual unit I upgraded was a 3670 which has that 64 meg of RAM.

Make sure after you upgrade to PPC2002 you aapply all of the EUU patches. After you have done that you should have the most stable PPC2002 unit you can get.

I can't be sure but the upgrade utility itself does a number of checks to make sure you are upgrading the right machine. You could always follow it through to the final step before committing to the upgrade of the OS. Back out there if you're still uncertain.

Only upgrades from 2002 to upgraded 2002. Doesn't do 2000 -> 2002. Anyone know how to flash from 2000 to 2002 for the 3630? Can one still buy the upgrade licence from Compaq/HP?

Cheers

I don't believe they offer it anymore, Your best bet would be to find it in the selling section here or on ebay.

Hello,

I tried to access the web page from the above, but it showed access not allow. Therefore, can not download the PPC2002 ROM upgrade software. Do you know any other site can download the software for iPAQ 3630? If you still got the software on hands, do you mind to mail to me?

Many thanks for your help.

I am interested as well in upgrading to Win CE 2002 but have had no luck thus far in finding the operating system itself, I know it's a CD ROM but cannot find it on e-bay I have several books I purchased from Amazon that I did not realize I could not tranfer to 3630 as is. I need the upgrade so that I can download the secured ver. of Microsoft Reader I'm really happy with my 3630 especially after upgrading my RAM but this issue is a sticking point in our budding relationship.

The link I posted does work (I just tried it!). A more specific link is http://h18007.www1.hp.com/support/fi...oad/16541.html and that works too (I just tried it).
