Recovering Databases when upgrading
Hi Guys,
This is my first itme on this forum and it looks to be very informative. However, I have not been able to find anyone with the same question as me.
I have had my 3670 since they came out and it has proved very reliable and stable with expansion, gps, modem and wired network card. Looking to get a wireless network next.
Here is my question: The last time I upgraded to 2000 I Lost everything. Activesync would not see the new system as the same machine and I could not recover things like my calandar and contacts. I want to upgrade to 2003 but not at the sacrifice of having to code everything back in. Has anyone else solved this or does the new upgrade do it for you? I need some advice here.

On a side note I am stilled bumbed out about Microsoft not letting the user set what apps he loads. If they did we could fit Media Player in the ROM.
Thanks for reading this,
Radarguy

If the upgrade you speak of requires a hard-reset then do not worry, all is not lost! You didn't even have to lose your contacts/calendar the last time you upgraded.

When you re-establish your Activesync connection, AS should ask you whether you want to a) merge info or b) copy all info from your PC to the PPC. If you choose (B) then all Outlook data will be copied to your PPC.

As far as your installed programs. You can go into AS --> Tools --> Add/Remove programs and re-select (check) the apps that you wish to install.

Not so bad now, is it?

HTH!

MODS: This issue seems to be asked over and over. I think this makes a good candidate for a FAQ-type issue.

Thanks for the reply HTH,
I am not sure what you mean by a hard reset. It was a couple of years ago when I did the last upgrade and I don't remember whether a hard reset was part of the process and since I have not tried the new 2003 upgrade i am not aware if one is required here. Besides I do not follow the logic of not loosing data WITH a reset! i will take your word for it.

I do remember that when I tried to copy info I got a message to the effect that the data was not created with the iPaq I was trying to copy to. That is the scenario that i do not want to get into, but, again, I wiil take your word for it.

i am sorry if I am repeating a thread. I did a search and found only people havi ng problems with the upgrade and could find no messages dealing with restoration. I guess i was using the wrong key words.

Thanks again,
radarguy

A hard reset is when you have to "wipe the entire" contents of memory back to factory state. Many OS upgrades (not minor patches) require a full reset the device. This is in contrast to what is called a "soft reset" which is akin to rebooting your PC - you clear out program memory but storage memory remains intact.

Remember, you after upgrading your device where it performs a hard reset, you should delete the existing partnership on your PC before connecting the PPC through AS. You can do this by going to File Menu in ActiveSync and "Delete Partnership". After doing this, when you connect your PPC to the cradle (or cable) you will re-start the process and you will be asked whether you want to merge, or replace your contact and calendar data.

BTW, HTH means "hope this helps".

HTH!
