3850 Expansion Pack - Damaged beyond repair?
Hi guys,

After working fine until now, for some reason my Compaq Ipaq's 3850 Expansion Pack (P/N 249705-B21) seems to have developed a permanant fault. When I now slide it on to the Ipaq and it clicks into place all that happens is that the red "Soft Reset" screen appears and never goes away. All it does is flash or flicker occacsionally, but the PPC nevers resets itself to the Today screen as it used to with the "initialising" expansion pack sound it used to make.

If I remove the expansion pack then the Soft Reset screen stays for a few more sconds before the Today screen then appears, so I believe the Ipaq itself is ok.

I would like to get the EP working again as it has a useful back-up battery attached to it and an even more useful CF GPS reciever that I use with my Tom Tom Navigator software.

I have tried removing both items from the EP before attaching to the Ipaq as I thought they may be the problem, but with or without them attached the same problem occurs everytime.

Anyone come across anything similar or do you think the expansion pack is now faulty and if so, is it repairable or cheaper to just replace?

I'm not sure but it sounds to me like your Exp pack has bit the big one, if it is a plus pack you could try tofind another Battery and see if the battery is the problem but that is doubtful as I would think that it would default to the main battery. I am inclined to believe that it is the pack itself. BTW welcome to Ipaq Hq

Thanks for the help so far.....any more advice welcome.

Out of interest and to see if it would fix the problem I tried a "Hard Reset" of my iPaq with the expansion pack fitted.

I got exactly the same results as first described and bizzarely the unit didn't even hard reset, as all my data and programs were still intact once I'd removed the EP and the iPaq had restarted itself, so I guess that confirms that the EP is well and truely damaged beyond further use!
