Dead battery, dead IPaq?
Looked to see if this subject had been addressed before, but didn't see anything, so if this is redundant, I apologize. When the battery on my IPaq 3850 goes dead (for whatever reason), I have to restore my IPaq, as it loses all of its settings, programs, etc. Is this normal behavior? I guess another way of asking my question is, does a dead battery cause the IPaq to clear out everything?

Yes.. Remembering things in the main memory uses power.. so when you run out of power your memory vanishes

Just would like to know, why does your battery run out a lot, the way you ask sounds like it's a regular accurance to you.

Yes, I'm sorry to say, loosing everything that you've added to the IPAQ beyond the software installed on it out of the box (basically the OS) is the way these older devices were designed. You don't, however, lose what you've installed/saved to a CF/SD card.

I've got a 3850 myself and have goofed up on travel where I've let my battery die. The best thing I ever did was purchase a good backup utility so that if/when my dies I can restore quickly.

Dear everyone,

I have just got an Ipaq-3850 as a gift from my friend, but my battery is dead. When I plug charger into my Ipaq, the machine is OK, but when I unplug the charger, it is no power at all.

Anyone can help me, how to resolve this problem. If I have to change my battery, tell me where to buy a new battery for IPAQ-3850.

All your reply are highly appreciated.

Thanks and regards,

Thanh Oanh

Unfortunatly..yes this is normal. No battery means "hard reset" and it's back to the standard software. So, frequently backup your data and keep your battery alive. It's a discipline you'll get used to (not for my brother, he has lost his data now 3 times mwhahahaha)

I very much appreciate all of the replies to my question, and now I don't feel quite so bad about it happening. I guess the follow on question then is, why does the battery appear to go dead so quickly (note: I haven't done any serious testing of this. Just my observation), even with the IPaq off? Is the battery discharging even when the IPaq is off?

To RICOUK,
Yes, it does seem as though I lose battery quite a bit, even when I'm not actively using the device. I do know that I can have the IPaq in the car (I use it primarily for GPS), not on, for a week or so, and it will be dead. Don't know whether that's normal behavior or not.

@wellfooled
Remember: an iPAQ is allways consuming power because it's never "off" . It remains in standbye. So, it will slowly discharge your battery. A week is a normal period to totally drain your battery and generate a "hard-reset".
I use an extension sleeve with CF and extra battery so my PPC can last longer with its power (just to be sure ). Using IR, BT and full brightness will shorten the battery. I try to keep the power >80% and charge it (and sync it) regularly.
Greets,
René
