Sync Problems with 3955
I just bought a used 3955 and wondered how I can tell which version of mobile I have. The settings say OS Version is Windows CE 3.0 and the ROM version is 1.11.00 ENG.
I am running Windows Mobile Device Center 6.1 on a Vista machine and i'm having A LOT of sync problems. I just noticed in the specs that 6.1 is for pocket mobile 2003. Could this be my problem?

I had an older model iPAQ 3650 and tried to upgrade to 2002 and trashed my unit so i'm a bit afraid to go through that again.
What do you suggest????

Thanks & God bless!

I think Windows CE 3.0 is Windows Mobile 2002. Windows Mobile Device Center can be used with Windows Mobile 2003 devices (and more recent operating systems). The 3955 is upgradeable to windows mobile 2003. If you wish to sync the 3955 to a Vista machine, you really have no choice but to upgrade to windows mobile 2003.

come to think of it, I wouldn't be able to install wm2003 unless I did it on a different machine right? Otherwise I might encounter a sync problem during the upgrade and destroy my iPAQ. I'll bet that's what happened to my 3650.

Yes, if you get a windows mobile 2003 update, you'll want to be sure to install it from an XP machine, since it will not be compatible with a Vista machine.

As you know, upgrading the ROM on a mobile device is a bit risky, but there are some things you can do to minimize your risk. See this article I wrote for some hints: ROM & Firmware Updates

For your 3650, you could try installing the update from an XP machine and you might be able to get that one working again.

Thank you Julie for your responses!

I will have to try and get to an XP machine. As for my 3650 I got a message saying that the back up failed. Shortly after that the ipaq screen went white and came back up to the my info page, but was locked up. I couldn't even turn it off. I tried reseting it and even did a hard reset with no luck.
Each time I rebooted, the screen came back darker and darker until there was nothing but a crosshatch like patter with one clear band through the middle of it. Do you think it's salvageable or is it toast?

Does this look like all I need or will I need additional software?

That update looks like it could work, and the seller says they will help if you can believe it.

It wouldn't hurt to try to run the update for your other pocket pc once you get to an XP machine. You really don't have anything to lose with that one.

You say it "COULD" work... That scares me. :-)
What should I get and where should I get it? I'm really new to this whole pda thing and so far my experience hasn't been good.

The only place to get this update is from eBay. Just take your time and be careful, follow my hints in that article and it's entirely likely everything will go off without a hitch.

Ok, I finally got up the nerve to upgrade my iPAQ today and it seems to have gone well! I went to my brothers place and used his XP machine. Man I was sweating bullets! LOL
Now it's time to take it home and see if it works on my Vista machine.
PRAY FOR ME! :-)

CRAP!!!

It will not power on now. It will power off, but I have to reset it to power it on.
Any ideas what's going on????

Also, it will not charge unless I put in it the cradle when it's on
