IPAQ 3900 Unearthed
I have just unearthed an old IPAC 3900 (I think it is a 3955 but don't know how to tell for sure). I haven't used this since 2005 but after recharging I hit on restore and everything is back in it.

I remember never having any luck getting online at free wifi spots. I have an AmbiCom WL 11 SD card and tried it again yesterday but it says the driver isn't loaded. I don't know where to get a driver at this point. Any ideas on that? AmbiCom doesn't support it.

Anyhow, rather than invest in a new PDA -- although the new Classic looks wonderful -- I would prefer to upgrade the 3955. I have ordered a Pocket PC 2003 upgrade for $6 through EBAY. But more than anything I would like to get online at the numerous free WiFi spots throughout my town, Santa Fe. It beats carrying a laptop around.

According to Asset Viewer I have the 1.11.00 ROM revision. Is that what I need to get online? If so, what do you recommend as a LAN card? I am a total novice on this stuff so would appreciate any help I can get. Thanks!

I'm not sure which version of the WL11 SD card you have, but Ambicom's support site lists three different versions (Rev 1.0, Rev 2.0, Rev 2.5). Do none of those drivers work for you? Link at: Ambicom

This driver site also seems to list the same versions of the WL11-SD, but I've never used it before and can't vouch for it. AmbiCom Network Driver Download

Lastly, if the above do not work, have you tried emailing Ambicom? Another (TW) of their sites says to email them for the driver.

PS
It looks like ROM 1.11 is the most current for the 3955 (that is running PPC 2002), so I think you're set there.

You can get Ambicom Dirvers for your card here. Check out IkeHiker's WiFi Guide for some setup tips.

IPAQ 3900 Drivers and 2003 Upgrade
Thanks so much for the driver info. I looked all over the Ambicom site and didn't see that link.

I am having another problem. I am trying to install the 2003 upgrade. I have my PDA in its cradle but the software says "Warning 111: Power Adapter Not Plugged In."

I don't understand. How do I transfer data from my PC to my PDA by plugging the power cord into AC and then into the bottom of my PDA and bypassing the PC? That doesn't work. Transfers are always done through my cradle.

Can somebody make sense of this for me? Thanks again! PJ in Santa Fe

Basically if your device loses power while upgrading you'll end up with a brick that won't do anything. Do you have a power cord going into your cradle? if you do you shouldn't worry about that warning.

2003 Upgrade
I have a cradle the PDA sits in. The cradle is plugged into a USB port in the PC and all synching is done from there. No direct AC source.

Separately, I have an ac power source that plugs into the bottom of the PDA and I use that for charging.

I think I'm screwed on this one.

When your iPaq is cradled does the charging light come on? Also check the back of your cradle, there should be a place to plug in the AC power.
