3870 add/remove programs

I have recently discovered that I am unable to install any progams on to my iPAQ 3870. The add/remove programs will not open in activesync to allow installation, nor will it open directly from the tools menu although it is trying to do so. It never used to do this. Can anyone help please? :bang:

Help ... error message: USB port cannot open

Hi Jensen,

I need help please. I had follow all your instruction to change my ipaq H3850 into PPC2002 Eng ver. But I get the error message: Cannot open usb port! ... try to replug-in the usb cable. I did c the red screen with a word "COMPAQ", but without anything in the angle (e.g. USB or Serial). My ipaq is chinese version bought from Taiwan. When I softreset it, i saw ipaq 1.15 ... Please help. Is there any way of changing the chinese version of pocket PC into English version? I have search thru the forums.

Really appretiate if you can help me to figure it out. Thank you very much!

Regards,
Wong

Sill Rom downgrade issues with my iPAQ 3850

I am new here I have the simular problem with my iPAQ and I have just tried the downgrade an I still have Rom version 4.00. I am trying to get the Rom version 1.20 back on it so I can upgrade to Pocket PC 2003 Premium w/outlook 2002 Upgrade which I just bought on CD from HP. Right now on my IPAQ I have ROM version 4.00.01 ENG and OS version Windows CE 4.20 and I am trying to do the Rom downgrade so I can update this dam thing and I am having issues. Like I said I tried what Jakob did and it's not downgrading. :crooked:

So now I would like to downgrade my ipaq to windows mobile 2002.. But I'm not sure how to do so, and I'm afraid to corrupt my pocket pc by doing something wrong!!
Is there anyone on this forum that can help me with my problem??

Kind regards
Jakob Jensen
Jakob,

You can safely use the WM2003 Beta edition. 3850 do not have bluetooth build-in. So it does not harm your device for the bluetooth utility not enabled/usable.

Unless you are using 3870, which is 3850 + Bluetooth.

Then you need to revert back to 2002. Search for "Corrupted ROM" to get the procedure.

Good luck.

If anyone out there ever gets in the same situation as me, here is a step-by-step guide, and don't worry it's not as complicated as it might seem
Jakob, first of all -thanks for your guide! It worked like a charm on a mate's 3850...
...but I'm afraid I did something wrong on my own 3835!!!
Introduction: right before upgrading from PPC2002 to PPC 2003 I did a full backup via Compaq's own software.
So I thought I had a 'good' (?) .nbf file to restore later, just in case.

When I went through the process as described by you, I thought to use my backup as a ROM file, instead of a blank one as per your directions.
At about 99% my PC stated something about a "Lost USB connection".
The Ipaq asked me to remove the battery, right as it should do, and the screen started fading, again as usual.

Now, to the troublesome part: it won't turn on anymore.
What's worse, if I put it in the cradle (or even just give it straight power from the mains) the charging led won't turn on either.

Just a plain, dead 3835.

Any ideas, apart dismantling it and selling it for spares?????

Thanks in advance, guys..... ;)

Cheers,
Mack

Update!

If I use the Ipaq on external power AND press power, 1, 4 and soft reset buttons the unit comes to life!

Um, life.... well, it turns on on the red 'COMPAQ' screen, but nothing else.
Plus, if I disconnect it from the mains the screen fades again, and it does the same if I press the soft reset button.
And the charging led won't ever turn on either.

Whichever way I look at it, I'm still stuck: I can't put the unit in the cradle AND perform the 'octopus thing' with the buttons to see if I can reach it from the PC...

..in a word: HELP!!!

UPDATE: The unit is working!!
Although I don't know why it all went wrong in the first place, the main problem was obviously a definitely flat battery.
Thus I needed to find a way to "put the unit in the cradle AND perform the 'octopus thing'.." so that I could flash the unit and restore it properly.
After a couple of days of tinkering with a dead ipaq, the simplest solution came to my mind: dismantle the cradle!
It's been quite easy to do: with the always useful .6 torx screwdriver I took apart the cradle, so that (with both power and USB connected) I could access the reset button with the unit still connected.
From that point on, it was like a piece of cake: got into USB update mode, launched host11.exe and flashed it as per Jakob instructions.

Again, I say it's been easy -it only took some time to put together all the informations I gathered on this great forum!

So, thanks again everybody: this community rocks!!! :D
Mauro

PS: Paolo, a giudicare dal nome parliamo la stessa lingua ;) mandami un MP se posso esserti utile in qualche modo.... :)

My 3835 is dead too!!!!

My 3835 is doing the same thing....I flashed it from version 1.x to 4.0 (some hacked version) and it says it has no identity. When I try to use the various HP updaters to flash it it tells me the PPC has incorrect identity (model number)...it's blank! When I use the host11.exe and modify the nk.nd0 it says it lost the usb connection at 99 or 100% and the PPC reads Remove Battery. I do a hard reset or soft reset I just get the Compaq screen. Help! Help!

Had the same problem as the original guy but have solved it wit this :-)

Only one question, If you run the official iPAQ update now it still says it has no version name, can this be changed in the registry? would removing another line rather than the first one with a hex editor (which has the name in) let it keep it's name?
