ipaq 3850 sd card problem

I've bought a 2GB Kingston SD card, but it only comes up as "total storage 970.80 MB".

I have Microsoft Pocket PC Version 3.0.11171 (build 11178) installed.
Should I update anything?

Thanks in advance.

Did you format the card before using in your PPC?
Also, where did you buy the card from?

The ipaq automatically formated it when I inserted it for the first time.

I purchased it from dvd.co.uk, which, as far as I know, is a reputable website.

Unfortunately I haven't got a card reader, but I'm going to try to format it again with the ipaq...

I have now formated the sd card using storagetools, but it still shows the card as a 1gb.

Has anyone actually used successfully a 2gb card with an 38xx ipaq?

Sounds to me like your card is at fault.
I would either find or invest in a card reader.
I have Kingston cards and don't know of anyone else haveng difficulty with them.
Was this a new card?
A card reader will help you see if the card is the problem or not and it is also a much faster way to load the card.

Yes :)
The card may need formatted using a PC (using the FAT32 file system).

Thanks for your answers.

Yes, it is a new card.
I've ordered a reader and hopefully this will solve my problem.

Right, I've formatted the card using a reader in windows xp, and shows in explorer as a 2GB card.

BUT, when I stick it into my 3850, it's still recognised as a 1GB card

What on earth is going on???

As usual, any help would be much appreciated:)

If you have a PC that can boot from USB, then you could try partitioning the card in two 1 mb, and see - maybe it after at soft reset will register as two cards.

hi,
i'm having a similar problem with a h3835, but it is with a Kingston 4GB [SD/4GBFE] card. It only reads it as 1 GB. I have tried formating it FAT32 in a card reader with WINXP which showed and formatted it as a 4GB card, and also in the IPAQ after first inserting it, but the IPAQ still reads it as 1GB.

The Ipaq has the 1.40 bios [PPC 2003].

Any ideas? Maybe a Kingston/IPAQ issue?

Have you had any luck thom01?

Chris

just bought a SanDisk 2GB SD Memory Card for my 3850. I originally had Pocket PC Version 3.0.11171 (build 11178) installed, but updated the ROM to the latest build from HP's site, then updated to Pocket PC 2003. Card works fine, showing up as a 2 GB card. I never did try it with 11178, but sounds like one of the updates I did allows me to see a 2 GB card.

Try the HP update (free) and see if that fixes it, and if not, grab the PPC 2003 from ebay for a couple of bucks and you should be good to go. good luck. sorry not sure about the 4GB card.

I tried a 2GB card on a 3870 with win2003 and again card showed as 1GB.

I can't understand why it would work on some but not others

By the way, the card works fine under winxp...

hey thom01,
looks like may both be s.o.l. with these cards and the the h3835/3850 according to the kingston website:

according their website it appears that none of their cards over 1GB are supported with the h3800 series. I'm in the same situation with my Kingston 4GB card that only registers as a 1GB card in my 3835.

Link to Kingston iPAQ h3835/h3850/h3870 site

That would explain why it works with some and not others.
So theoratically, another brand "might" work on a 38xx.

I won't push my luck. I'm going to ebay my 2gb and buy a couple of 1gb instead...

Hey thom,

I followed advice of one of the users here and updated Rom version to Rom 2.1 and my SD 2 Gb card now gets is recognised - I also downloaded a patch from the HP site relevant to SD cards, so you might want to do both. But it definitely worked with the Rom update - go to HP site and search for relevant updates for your device! Hope it works!
