iPaq 3950 ActiveSync Issue

I am new to this forum as well as to iPaq. I recently bought a used iPaq 3950 - and seperatly bought the Compaq iPaq Pocket PC Companion CD H3900 Series with Microsoft ActiveSync 3.5. I installed ActiveSync on my PC and when I tried to sync my iPaq I got a message on my 3950 that said it was unable to sync due to incompatable ActiveSync version. It instructed me to upgrade ActiveSync on my 3950.

I don't know what version I have on my 3950, and would love help and suggestions on what I need to do to sync properly.

Just go to Microsoft and download the newer version.
Uninstall the old version first, reboot, and install the newer version.

ActiveSync isn't really on the ipaq itself, it's only on the computer side.
