Misc. Rambling of a recent Palm convert
After owning three Palm OS PDAs over the last 5+ years, I went out at picked up a 4155 the other day. Initial impressions are that I love the wi-fi, not so in love with the PIM aspect. Seems to be less stable then my Palms were, less intuitive in some respects, but if you think of it as a minature Windows machine it is ok in that respect. Seems to be much less freeware available - a number of features that I was used to having included or found for free on my Palms are shareware software for the PPC.

I guess my biggest reservation thus far is the Datebook, Calendar part of the PIM. I am trying to keep an open mind and realize that I have used the Palm version for a long time, but still it just seems to be short on features, more cumbersome to use and overall, not a great product. I am looking at Pocket Informant as an add on, but not sure if I like it yet (especially for $25.00). My last PDA was a Sony Clie and even though it had multimedia capabilities, the 4155 is vastly superior in this respect. I really like the screenof the 4155 (until I looked at a new Palm T3 today), that is one beautiful screen.

Overall, I think the decision to switch to a PPC will in the end be a good fit for me. I just wish the PIM was better out of the box.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I too came from the PalmOS world, but when the X5 was released by Dell. Now PIM functions were (and are) so integral to my life that functioning without was difficult and stressful. It was tough to get used to PPC PIM use, but over time between Outlook from Office XP and my PPC, I can now say with certainty that I could not go back. When I use my wife's m515 or one of my daughter's m130s, I am lost. It looks as difficult to use now as the PPC platform did to me then.

I now have a 4155 and am loving it.

The short version of this story is you will probably get used to it and it will become natural over time.

BTW: I have tried some add ons and to me they just made the PIM functions more difficult. However, some users like them.

Welcome to the PPC world.

I actually thought the Calender on the PPC was better than the one of the Palm. The Palm one has little options for displaying appointments. You're stuck with the standard view for seeing all your appointments. You can also add voice notes to PPC calender entries.

And I agree, the other PIM application I tried were terrible. They take a while to start, use Program memory and are as easy to use.

rickthornton,

How did you end up solving it? Did you get Pocket Informant and it did the trick for you?

I own several PDAs, and have favored Palm OS, with PIMs being one of the major factors. I keep the appointments in all my PDA's except my Axim, because I have never warmed up to PPC PIMs. I even have Pocket Informant and still was not interested. But I just got a 4155 and it is such a sweet device, that I'm going to give PPC PIMs more of a chance. JmE makes the valid point to the effect that we all can adapt.
I'm contentedly enjoying both platforms, but this 4155 is really swell-with integrated wifi and BT and wonderful form factor. And it is speedy too-web pages load faster than any PDA I have.
I do think HP has a real winner here.
