Power Off Problems
I've been having some strange issues with turning the 4150's power off.

About 50% of the time when I use the power button to turn off the unit the screen will shut off but the backlight will stay on! This has twice drained the main battery down to zero. Sometimes I cannot get the 4150 to turn off at all, I have to soft reset and then turn off. More often than not this problem occurs while I'm charging, though I'm not syncing. It's happened a few times without the external power though.

Other times, I cant get the unit to turn on with the power button. Again, a soft reset temporarily solves the problem.

Today another odd problem has cropped up -- The 4150 will shut down (screen backlight is off) but Wifi will stay on! Caught this one when it had drained the battery down to about 40%

The problem is that I can't seem to consistently replicate this behavior. I suspect it's a software problem, but before I start removing my installed software I just want to rule out a hardware or WM2003 issue. I wish someone would write a conflict catcher program that methodically lets you zero in on which programs or components may be clashing.

Anyone else having these types of problems?

I haven't heard of these problems, I think that you got a bad unit, I would suggest doing an exchange if possible.

Yeah, I would exchange the unit right away.

Hmmm. I don't have this problem after a hard reset. I still suspect it's some of the installed software.

Here's what's in there right now:

PocketWinc
Wisbar Advanced (using default skin/theme)
Nyditot Virtual Display 3.0
ButtonMax 1.1
Resco Explorer 2003
Pocket MVP/DIVX (latest build for wm2003)
Fitaly 3.0
GS Player2
PIEPLus 1.11

Some of these have their main executables in the IPAQ File store. Yes, I know it's not a good indea to do that, but I did test each program to see that it would operate out of flash memory.

Next step is to hard reset and restore the cuttent back up and remove each program one by one, in different combinations.

Before I do something drastic like send it to HP I definitely want to rule out any other possibilities

Wish me luck ;-)

I'm having the same problem with my 4155. I tried the suggestion of turning activesync off before powering down. Still had the problem.

The backlight is very dim, after hitting the power off button. You can barely tell that it is on. I ran my battery down completely last night and couldn't figure out why. It wasn't until I was in a dark area at work that I noticed that the screen seemed to be still on.

You can always just load in a software app that will allow you to turn off your PocketPC... or to restart it. I like to use a program called Restart it allows me to shutdown my PocketPC through software and besides it saves on the wear and tear of the on/off button.

By the way it is free... you can find it here for those that are interested.

I think that Howard2k got it right. I got the following email from HP about this issue:

Please note that the power button on the iPAQ should be pressed only for a second to switch off the unit. If the power button is pressed for more than a second, then the iPAQ will not switch off, instead it will enter the power save mode where the brightness of the backlight is set to low and the iPAQ remains switched on.

I played around with my power button and if I hit it very fast, everything turns off fine.

I am having an Ipaq h4350. I aslo facing some strange problem here:
1)same as you guys, it doesn't turn on when pressing the power button, I have to remove the battery then only it starts to respond again.
2) It doesn't turn off, this is relatively rare compare to problem one. I will have to perform a hard reset or soft reset.
3) When I am charging the PPC with my notebook USB power supply, even if I have turned off the PPC, still it will turn on by itself, and so slow down my charging process.

But, in general, it is still a cool ppc, just that if it had the feature to make phone ,then this would be perfect.

I have a 4350 about 8 months, I encountered the same problem as you guys recently, it happen frequently and the unit comsuming power while it fall in sleep, the unit turn to low power when I found that it was not able to turn on after a couple of hours, it quite annoying.

What I am thinking is this problem might be cause by some application I installed, plan to hard reset the whole unit and restore the fresh OS, see whether the problem still happen before reinstall all my application.

Don't have time to try that yet, if anyone has tried that please share with us.

Like Kingfish mentioned a hard reset, though annoying, is a great way to isolate whether it's a hardware or software issue.
