Startup programs
Anyone have any idea what the following programs in the Startup folder do?

DBMirror
gip
poutlook
Splash
Usbreg

I removed the BT tray from the startup since I am not using this feature. I think poutlook has something to do with the email. Looked all over the place but couldn't find anything on the others.

poutlook is for Pocket Outlook. The others must be from 3rd Party apps that you installed on your PPC.

Not sure what those do, but some of them I can guess at.

Splash -- I believe this is refers to the screen that shows up when you startup from a hard reset, ie the HP Print 'Splash' screen.

Using Resco Explorer I traced the link back to it's origin in the /Windows folder. It's linked to a file called Splash.jpg which is indeed the HP Print picture.

There's also a file called Splash.exe (a small applet to determine if the splash screen is to be displayed on startup or not) and a duplicate of Splash.link -- not surprising since the /Windows directory contains files in ROM. When you startup the IPAQ from a hard reset the machine dumps some files in ROM into folders in RAM such as the startup links into /Windows/Startup. This is why you always find those same sample .wav and .jpg files in /My Documents and why you can delete them with no ill effects -- They are still there in ROM in the /Windows directory.

DBMirror links to DBMirror.exe -- The exe file has the same icon as the HP Backup program. This may be to cache the more often used databases in memory to protect the originals from being corrupted, say if you were writing to a database and the power was interrupted. It may also function after the manditory soft reset the IPAQ makes you do when you do any backup or restore, possibly as a data integrity check.

USBReg -- this might have some interesting possibilities. Toshiba devices are able to do USB host mode so you can hook up keyboards, mice, etc to the pocket PC while it's in the cradle. I wonder if this is the reason why HP included a standard USB A to B cable in the 415x? Could be a hidden USB host mode function call. Let the speculation commence!

(of course it's probably a mundane function call designed to initalize the USB port for Activesync -- but hey, I can dream!)

Any idea if you got any memory back by removing the Bluetooth tray applet?

Removing the BTtray program did not do very much in terms of performance. I don't have any numbers to back up that claim but the machine felt the same. I'm going to remove some of the programs a few at a time and see how the machine runs. My old Axim X5 only had poutlook loaded on startup - of course it's also lacking the 4155's gizmos too
