Activesync over Wifi
I'm new to Pocket PC and IPAQs. Is it possible to sync with ActiveSync over wifi? I would think it has to be possible. I haven't read anything about this though. Anyone doing this.

Yes, I do this all the time. It is actually simple once you create your activesync partnership via syncing by the cradle. Once this is done and your WiFi network is established and working, you can use your WiFi card to connect to your network. Open activesync on your PPC and click sync.

Couple of notes: If you are using DHCP, make sure it is on the same network that your syncing computer is on or atleast there is connectivity between your WiFi network and your syncing desktop. If you are not using DHCP, setup a static IP on your PPC. If you sync with more than one computer, make sure that you select the correct name of your syncing computer in activesync on your PPC.

I have my Ipaq syncing fine via USB. I have the allow network syncing option checked. My syncing computer is on the same network as my Ipaq. How do I set up my Ipaq for the wifi syncing? When I click on sync I get first " Cannot connect to your work network you will need to configure a VPN connection"and then"Unable to connect. Verify your dialup or proxy settings are correct, and try again" I'm not trying to connect via VPN. When I get this I am already online-I have a current connection with IE. I have the correct PC selected for "when syncing remotely with a PC". Some network connection is probably not right. Like I said I'm new to the Pocket PC world. Thanks for your help.

Let's check your PPC network settings shall we.

Goto Start -> Settings -> Connections -> Connections Icon -> Advanced -> Select Networks Button.

Under Network Management make sure that you have "My Work Network" selected for both drop down lists. Click Ok. Select Network Card. For the "My network card connects to:" drop down, select Work.

See if that helps.

Don't know if this is the correct way or not but I had to go under File and get connected and have it search for my handheld while I initiated a sync from my Ipaq. I've had to do this a few times even after the initial sync to get it to start synchronizing. Is there a way to avoid doing this? My Ipaq sometimes just won't connect without doing this and it doesn't give an error message either, it just won't connect.

Thanks,
-Shane

If you can get on the internet, then you should be able to sync. I would first look at Activesync on the PPC. Open Activesync, goto Tools -> Options. Under the "Use this PC" drop down, make sure that the next two boxes are checked. Also make sure that you have the right PC selected in the dropdown if you sync to more than one PC. You can also specify if you want the PPC to disconnect after the sync or maintain the connection. Hit the options button and select "Maintain connection". Also make sure that your desktop is accessible from the WiFi network. An easy way to find this out is obtain the IP address on your PPC (whether it is static or DHCP). Try to ping that address on your desktop and see if it works. If you are using any app on your PPC that acts as a hosts file (etc Pocket Hosts), make sure that the correct IP address for your desktop is used or disable it. Also, make sure that you have a decent signal. Sometimes if the signal is weak, activesync will drop the connection even though you are still talking on the network whereas the connection will timeout.

Hope that helps.

I'm new to all this WiFi syncing. I just got the HP 6315 and am trying to sync wirelessly. I bought a usb BT for my laptop, but it's a huge hasstle to connect. Everything has to be done manually.

Would someone be so kind as to walk me through the setup?

Again, I'm using an HP 6315...trying to sync to my Dell Laptop with buildin wifi. I've never setup an ad-hoc connection in XP Professional before.

RE Your HP and wifi Dell Laptop
I first got my HP about 6 months ago and have been browsing okay but not syncing wifi because I wrote my PC addr wrong. Because browsing I didn't look further but now working. WIFI sync is limited to Mail Contacts and Calendar so you may need to sync USB if use others like notes tasks filesync or favourites.

You must setup in ActiveSync to Allow wireless connection or Enable Remote Access depending on what version you have.

I found a great page that covers just about everthing from setting up your XP VPN server, Firewalls PPTP and setting up Virtual Private Network the connection PC

At one point it say configure your wifi router to allow PPTP connection. I have no Idea how to do on yours so you'll have ask del how to get onto your wifi router and setup? Your router will also need to be configered to use a certain range of addrs which is fed into incommign TCP properties. Example allows two addr in range but my Linksys used different addressing.

All IP addresses in example a his, his router addrs his computer addr which is 192.168.1.11 should not be taken litererally use yours.

WM 2003 PocketPC PPTP VPN Mini How-To

Read first then ask if have questions.
