iPAC backup/cradle issues
hi, everytime i open my iPAC h4155 (after inputting my password), i get a message: "iPAQ Backup Insufficent space for image file. Space required; 11516KB." the screen has an option: "View Report" the information in the report says: "Operation: Backup failed" Image file: \My Documents\Backup_2003-12-05.pbf" can anyone help me with this? what do i need to do to solve this problem?

Also, while i have your attention, when my iPAQ is in the cradle my desktop is immobile! even when it's only charging. i can't log onto MSN, Internet Explorer or open any of my normal web pages. when i remove the iPAC from the cradle my desktop functions fine! what's going on? my desktop is a Dell Dimension 8200, with a Pentium 4; i am also running Norton 2003 Internet Security AV protection.
Thanks Much!

Sounds like iPAQ Backup is trying to do a automated backup. Open iPaq Backup under programs, click on Options and then Schedule. See if the "Enable Scheduled Start Up" is checked.

Not really sure why placing the PPC in the cradle would lock up your desktop. It might be a USB Driver issue. Is it syncing at all?

So Activesync works and you can sync just fine but your desktop is completely locked up until you uncradle your PPC?

How weird!

you got it! it is weird...i'm using a USB hub, so i'm going to try plugging my cradle directly into my computer to see if anything changes...btw, you were right "Enable Scheduled Backup" was checked, i unchecked it and will let you know if that solves the problem. Thx.

Reference iPAQ Backup
Make sure that the backup target is not pointing to the File Store! It appears as if the File Store is the default target location. You must manually point to the external card on your first backup operation. This is the most obvious reason that jumps out at me as to the cause of your problem.

As for the USB issue, I would uninstall and reinstall the Active Sync software and then try reconnecting the cradle directly to the USB port. As previously mentioned, it sounds as if you have a resource conflict. What desktop OS are you running?

Ah ha, a USB Hub. Activesync does not work well with some USB hubs. Plug it directly into the computer. That might/should help.

well 50% success...unchecking "Enable Scheduled Backup" seems to have addressed my file backup problem.
however, moving my cradle directly to the USB port on my desktop doesn't seem to make any difference with my freeze up problem. the computer still stops when the iPAQ is in its cradle. when i say 'stops', i mean when i attempt to open any web pages including Internet Explorer i get the "web page cannot be found" message. when i remove the iPAQ from the cradle eveything works fine! btw, i am running XP on my desktop. i didn't want to un/re-install ActiveSync but unless you can think of anything else, i guess that's my only course of action now! THX!

When you say you are running Norton AV, are you also running a Norton software firewall? If so, try disabling the firewall and then synching your handheld. Your "freezing" definition is a little sketchy. Does the entire system lock up or is it a mere Internet browsing issue?

When you experience these lock up's, type Ctl>Alt>Del and view the Task Manager. Look under applications and see if there are any programs not responding. This is a good starting place in order to find the culprit.

If this doesn't work, you are goig to be forced to uninstall and reinstall ActiveSync. Then connect the cradle directly to a DIFFERENT USB port. Make sure the OS recognizes the hardware as being NEW. One last thing, try a Hard Reset of the device prior to the initial sync.

sorry, i guess i wasn't clear...first, yes i am running a Norton firewall, should i disable it everytime i sync? seocnd, you're right, my use of the word "freezing" is probably incorrect. it is only internet browsing that's affected when the iPAQ is in its cradle...i hate to say this but since the problem is easily solved by just removing the PPC from the cradle, i'm considering just accepting it as a "quirk" and living with it...i will try your suggestions and let you know if i'm successful...THX!

That's a little quirk that would drive me crazy. I am also running Norton Antivirus but I am not running any firewall software on my computer. Not necessary since I am running a Linux firewall and my cable modem has a built-in firewall. Try disabling your Norton Firewall and see if you still have problems.

I also don't run a firewall on my PC since I'm behind the NAT on my router, so I won't be able to give you the exact steps, but they are described here on Chris De Herrera's site.

Realize that opening ports does decrease your security if you are really relying on the firewall.
