A soft reset "soft boot" is basically reseting your device; think of it like rebooting your PC. A hard reset or "hard boot" is restoring your device back to the way you bought it. Everything in RAM is erased and it goes back to factory settings; much like formatting and reinstalling your OS.

Since I don't have a 4155 I am not sure where the reset button is placed on your device (I held one but did not look for it specifically).

The reset button on the 4150 / 4155 is on the left side of the unit. It is a small button that is inset into the unit so you will need a paperclip to press it. It is under the reset button.

I'm soft resetting my 4150 approx once to twice each week, where an application has hung, or iTask doesn't respond anymore.

Never had to hard reset (thankfully)!

That's good knowing that some people have to soft-reset their PPC atleast twice to three times a day!

Be careful, hard resetting will wipe clean all your data in RAM (contacts, calander, notes, etc). Remember to do a backup if you can!

When you say "if you can" in regards to backing up, I would just like to say that you should ALWAYS make a backup, especially if you have Contacts stored, special files, etc. Backing up your iPAQ is very important.

Just to throw out a different opinion - I find backups of only moderate use.

I've hard reset my PPCs on purpose half a dozen times and, in most cases even though I had a backup, I did not use it. All my PIM data is stored on two PCs (home and work), I use sd memory cards for 99% of my files, and it takes 45min to an hour to do a fresh install of programs (after which the PPC tends to run faster than it does with a restore). Admittedly, this is longer than the 5-10 minutes a restore from many backup applications take but isn't far from what some users have reported in using ActiveSync restore.

The only use I typically make of backups is when I install new programs and decide to revert to the PPC status prior to the install.

That's very true. Even though backups are good, all backups are not worthy to be restored to your PPC. In alot of cases the registry gets larger and larger after use and installation and uninstalls can result in bad keys which slows the PPC down. Restorations can just bring back some of the problems that the PPC had whem you backed up the PPC. Sometimes starting fresh is good.

I should have made myself a little clearer. I have actually never used the iPAQ backup that comes included with the ROM. What I meant by backup is all my contacts and files that aren't stored on cards. Contacts can be a real bi**h to have to retype and put back in.
