Viewing PC files from your PDA, wirelessly
Is this possible?

I have a Linksys wireless router at home, and my PC connects to the internet through that, as does my 4150.

What I'd love is if my PocketPC could also view files on my PC, just from using 802.11b, through the router, straight to the PC.

If anyone could let me know how or point me in the right direction I'd be very pleased.

Thanks.

Yes this can be done. First you need to create a share on your PC and make sure that Microsoft file and print services is enabled. Once you share is setup you could use either Resco File explorer, Netrunner, or Netuse to map your shared drive to your PPC via wifi and voila; you have access to your files on the PC.

You can also use file explorer that is already on the device and type in pc name in the path and browse your files like that. The only thing is if you are going to open those files(such as word, excel, ect..) you have to have a program to open these files in their original format When you move files to the PPC via active sync there is a built in conersion process that takes place

Now that I think about it the conversion for these files may happen if you transfer these files to you ppc over wifi but the formatting of the original document will be lost

The you would put "//home/X" where X is the name of the shared resource on your PC. So if you shared the C: drive and the name was C, then your path would be //home/C.

Cheers for your help everyone! Been very useful.

OK so I've managed to connect to my PC - C:

It said that could be dangerous, sharing the whole C: drive? Should I change it so it's just one folder?

I tried putting a folder called "PDA" in the C: drive and accessing that but I wasn't sure how.

Also, I can't stream music or video like this, would I need additional software to do that?

Thanks again.

Sharing your entire C: drive is not dangerous as long as your network is protected from the internet.

If you have your entire C: drive shared and you create a "PDA" folder, then you should be able to see it on your PPC when you mount the drive.

Most apps require you to look for files in folders. The problem with the builtin File explorer is that when you map a shared drive it doesn't map it to a folder on your PPC. So when you go to try to find the files using your app it won't find them. That is why I suggested either Resco File Explorer or Netrunner. I use Netrunner which works well. When mapping a shared drive, the shared drive is presented as a local folder on your PPC. When you open your audio or video software you can simply navigate to the folder name that your share is mapped to and you will be able to find your files on the network and use them.

Ah, excellent!

I got Resco, it's all working perfectly. Thanks!

Ok, seriously, this'll be my last question :P ...

What's the best media player to get? The default WMP one doesn't support many formats.

Ah, that's why I am not a big fan of WMP.

I use GSPlayer and PocketMusic. I personally like GSPlayer. It supports MP3 and OGG formats. GSPlayer is free. PocketMusic is a free player as well which supports MP3 and OGG. PocketMusic also has a add-on app bundle which allows additional formats as well as other add-on options.

You can find both freeware apps at www.freewareppc.com.

Oh! dude this thread linked with the wireless activesync thread is excellent.

I'm so counting my pennies towards a wifi card. I presently got bluetooth all linked up to two Pc's and my ipaq but it's a tad tired and slow.

Very true. You will be happy with wifi. If you do some looking you can find wifi cards very cheap these days. There is always the possibility of setting up a wifi adhoc network; all you need is two wifi cards.

Just to add to the debate on streaming files from the PC, from a confused Newbie:

I can now see the shared PC files via wi-fi, but can't open them, e.g. photo's will not open when selected, nor will mp3's play. Do I need 3rd party software to enable this? I don't really want to transfer a copy of each file onto the ipaq (which then enables them to be opened). That sort of defeats the object of keeping them all in one place.

Also, does anyone know of a site that has instructions on how to connect to a public hotspot? I have an account with BT Openworld, but the limited instructions don't make any sense to me. My iPAQ 4150 can see the network, but I can't connect to it.

Thanks in advance.

Resco (payware) and Total Commander (freewar) will both allow you to open files. Resco will actually map the drive so its directly accessible from other programs on the PPC but there's also another freeware app that will allow you to do that with Total Commander but I don't remember the name and I'm posting this from my iPaq so I cannot easily search for it. Check the WiFi Guide linked fom my signature. It's mentioned in the networking section.

How about the reverse?

I want to be able to access my SD card from my PC from the command prompt. NOT thru the ActiveSync explorer.
