Browser Limitations?
Hello,

I was considering buying an iPaq 4155, and one of the major draw points is the WiFi connection and internet abilities. Does the browser have any limitations. I'm just wondering if it can't view certain pages, and if the pages have to be designed for use with this browser. The reason I ask is I play a pay-to-play game, which has an integrated browser, but it is very strict on what it can view (which isn't a big loss, and the browser is hardly ever needed). So, has anyone had any problems viewing websites, and if so, could you list the link(s) so I can examine the site and determine what the browser can handle for myself.

Thank you,
Singularity

Welcome to iPaqHQ!

PIE does have some limitations if you where to compare it to IE on the desktop. PIE is capable of viewing any webpage. However the some pages are optimized for mobile devices and some are not. For example if you look at www.sun.com you will see the the page is not optimized for PIE. But if you point the PIE browser to www.ipaqhq.com then you will see what sites that are optimized for mobile devices look like.

Thank you, that's exactly what I needed to know. As long as I can view any webpage, I plan on picking up a 4155 soon =)

An extra point - many financial sites check for browser version and will not allow access unless you are at least IE6. PIE reports version 4 (I think). There are registry hacks to get around this but in my experience, these do not always work. For example, while I can load the sign-in page for my bank, it never 'takes' the user name and password, so I cannot log on to it.

I decided it was a bad idea to be doing this over unsecured wireless anyway (such as you'll be on at remote locations), so it became a non-issue for me.

When Netfront 3.1 is used to access a bank site it is accepted at most that I've tried and I also see the same little padlock on the screen as I would if I were using IE. I'm assuming that this connection is as secure as IE, is there a reason that it isn't secure ?

It is a secure site, just like you were using a desktop computer. However, ikehiker was referring to the fact that sometimes wireless signals are susceptible to attacks from various hackers. However, if you use a password and encrypt the network with 64 or 128 bit encryption, it is extremely rare because someone would have to 1) be in range of the network 2)have something to access your system and 3) know a way around the password and 128bit encryption.

To Singularity: Something else you might want to invest in is a screen rotation application so you can get more area to view web pages that are not optimized for mobile connections. You can get one from Pocket Gear and Handango. Do a search on this site for some good ones we've talked about. Just type in "screen rotation"

Most banks and other secure sites use 128bit SSL encryption... So assuming PocketIE supports 128bit SSL it really wouldn't matter much if you were to access those sites from an un-secured wireless access point (e.g. Starbucks, etc). I believe that's what xboxlord meant but wanted to clarify anyway.
