Can't print through IP but can print if shared printer
Hi,

I'm trying to configure HP Mobile Printing so that my 4150 prints off the printer that is connected to the printer server on my router. The IP of the router is 192.168.0.1, and i am assuming that the port is 9100. This printer is also shared from my PC as \\dan\hp3820.

Well, I can't print if I use that IP, but, i can print if I specify \\dan\hp3820. It takes about 2 minutes but it prints. On the other hand, the IP thing times out after a couple of seconds and says, "Unable to connect to the network printer. Plesae check your network connection and printer IP address." Any idea why I can't print using the IP?

So your router has a built-in print server? or is the print server a separate device from the router?

I am thinking that the print server you have allows connection to the LAN and connects to your printer via USB or Parallel. The print server should have a different IP then your router. This is the IP that you would use.

Yeah, the print server is built into the router, with a parallel connection to the printer. How do I find the IP of the printer? In my windows xp pritner settings, it says that the printer is at an IP that is the same as the router's IP.

You got me with that one. I haven't seen too many routers with a builtin print server. I would imagine that some software was installed on your XP box or the driver itself is what the router is using to properly route the print job to the printer. The reason why using the printer share would work is because it then uses the drivers os the XP box to print (which we know already works). Printing directly to the IP would use drivers on the PPC (in HP Mobile Printing) which is very limited at best.

Whitelyt you are good. The reflection on the problem is as good as if I was saying it . Now Dan as Whitelyt says it is the computer that deals with the printer if you are using the DNS. But to be sure type in a dos shell ‘ping -a dan’ and then add in the PDA \\dan’s IP\hp3820 but I doubt you will have a better performance as it is still going to go trough the PC.
Here by my Tutorial as another point of reference: http://www.wifizard.com/tutorialsXP/...t-pc/index.htm
Cheers,
Iva,
