iPaq 4150 won't connect with mains lead attached
I hope you can help! I've had my 4150 for nearly a year, synching happily with my laptop at work. Now I don't work there any more so I took my ipaq home to synch with my desktop (which I'd setup previously). In between these two events my ipaq drained completely of both batteries. Now my PC says that "a USB device has malfunctioned" whenever I plug it in. And the battery refuseded to charge (ditto with the backup). Out of desperation I tried silly things & kind've got lucky. I charged the main battery in the cradle's aux slot & plugged the ipaq in its usual slot & disconnected the USB. This charged both batteries (don't ask my how/why!!!) but when I put the battery back & reconnected the USB it still said the malfunction thing. Lastly, by accident, I tried to synch without the mains lead plugged in. It synched no problem. When I plug the lead back in - even while it's synching - the ipaq disappears again & the PC says that 'M' word again.

Can anybody smarter than me help solve this?

Have you got a backup of your iPaq? If not, as you can sync to your desktop do a full backup before going any further. If your battery is full you should have more than enough power to do so.

Have you tried a soft reset? A hard reset (if you've drained both batteries I'm assuming that this will have happened anyway)? It might be worth a try, both with the battery in and out to see if it works.

Try cleaning (blowing on or dusting) the power/cradle/ipaq connectors. If something is shorting across from a power pin it might cause those symptoms only when it's plugged in (this is a pure guess though)?
