If I'm not in a "hot spot" area, am I able to connect to the internet via some cell phone carrier without any additional eqiptment...like the Palm VII used to be able to? If so, any idea what the monthly charges are? If not..any idea what PDA's can do that at this point?

Thanks!

Well, there are a few ways to connect to the internet using a cell phone carrier. With an expansion pack on your 5555, most cell phone carriers now carry wireless CF cards that will connect you to the internet. Or, if you have a cell phone, you can purchase a cable to connect your 5555 to your cell phone to connect to the internet. You will be limited however to 19200 bps though most cell phone companies because the connection from the cellphone to the PDA on most phones is 19200bps. The first option allows much faster connections. However, just buying a cable is a much cheaper solution but you definately sacrifice speed.

Unfortunately, no. WiFi works on a completely different frequency and modulation than cellular. You would need some kind of cellular access device (like a Sierra AirCard, or a cellphone and data cable) to get onto any cellular network.

Alternatively, you can get a bluetooth-enabled cellphone (Ericcson makes one, as I recall) and link to it via your bluetooth connection on the iPAQ. The cellphone would act as a modem for your PDA. This way, you don't have to deal with a cable; you can leave the phone in your pocket and hold the iPAQ.

Cheers,
-Pat

Speaking of the bluetooth phone option, any of you using this type of setup with sprintpcs?

I tried the CF card they had, but the signal perfomance sucked, and the .20 cents a minute for voice calls is lame.

If you buy an unlimited plan, TMOBILE offers one I beileve, it will be cheaping.

The Sierra Wireless Aircards are expensive, and for going on the internet while you are out, if you really need too! OR, go you could get a gomadic cable and connect your ipaq to your phone, or get the Sony Ericsson T610 or T68i.

I have my h5555 working with a CINGULAR acoount (NO CHARGE) and a NOKIA (forget model) with IR connection.

YES, you have to keep them close and still....but it works...and is FREE!

Next phone will have bluetooth! -I think that's the best way to go.

You have a couple of good options...the best would be to get a bluetooth phone with T-Mobile. It will be the least expensive option and the speed is comparable to everything but AT&T 's new Edge service. You can look into the same phones with Cingular as well...

I use a Nokia 6310i (Bluetooth) with O2 and a GPRS connection which you can upgrade to from your normal account and that works fine for checking mail etc, I even managed to connect to my home server with remote control software.
