Wep
Does the connection speed slows down when activating WEP?

I have not experienced any slowdowns when using WEP. Once authenticated, you should be able to surf just as if it wasn't on.

Hmmmm, Thanks... I turned on the feature and notice no change in speed. I never used wep thinking I would loose speed. But now that it is on..... it's pretty transparent.

And now it will be difficult for someone to tap into your WiFi setup to gain access to your network.

WEP does not reduce connection speed, but it does add some communications overhead. 128-bit WEP produces about a 10% performance impact, but the security very much overbalances the performance drop.

-Cheers!

My understanding is that at farther distances, you WILL FEEL A SPEED HIT if using WEP. My real-world experience confirms this....

...WANNA KNOW A BETTER way to get a secure wireless network w/out WEP? (READ ON)

Simply DISABLE BRADCAST SSID

AND USE the MAC FILTERING.

Works like a charm....

.....if hacker really wants to get in and can get past those 2 steps, then he will get in no matter what.

MINI-STUMBLER still does not work on my h555!

Simply disabling the broadcast SSID will only deter people who don't bother to do a 30-second packet capture when they detect RF energy in the Wi-Fi ranges. And filtering out MAC addresses will only deter people who want to hop onto your particular WLAN. It still offers absolutely no privacy whatsoever with respect to eavesdropping, which is what WEP is designed to prevent. Granted, WEP is hackable. But not nearly as hackable as a WLAN broadcasting in the clear. SOME encryption is far better than none at all.
