WiFi Diags ?
Is their any software to test the wifi functionality of my I5550 ?

I have been trying to connect my Ipaq to my wifi without success now for several days

I can see the device connect briefly then it drop off, from the device using ipconfig it grabs an ip briefly then also drops and default to an internal address.

Now either i am making a major school boy error (for which i appologise now) OR my device is at fault.

Any help greatly recieved

Is the WIFI provided by your ISP? Are you using an access point to connect to your home network that has a shared internet connection? A little more information please.

NTL dsl cable modem to Linksys router hardware lan, WAP connected to router obtaining DHCP from router.

Laptop connects to WAP fine via pcmcia wifi card
IPAQ trys but fails with no particular error, after it defaults to default internal address it still knows the wireless lan is their, ie signal and ability to see and remain connected to the WAP, but it refuses to obtain an ip and proceed.

If you need any more information let me know !

vxUtil and PocketDHCP have some diagnostic functions but they really work after the IP has been obtained. There are a few troubleshooting suggestions in the WiFi How-to linked from my signature but my guess is either some security feature (WEP or MAC filtering), your router isn't set up to assign another IP, or a hardware problem with the iPaq. Have you tried setting a static IP?

Cheers i shall give those tools a go later.
Fingers crossed I'm almost convinced that its not a hardware issue, more likely a config issue on my part.

It can see the WAP, infact it is quite happy to find and locate my works WAP by name and report conectivity.

From home it is the same, reports as being connected and if i browse my routers dhcp scope you can see it appear then disappear (which is when it obtains an internal 169 address)

when you check the ipaq it still reports being connected to the WAP, due to it not picking up an ip it is unable to connect to the internet or any of the machines on the lan.

Should I mention the obvious? WEP encryption configured properly? Check the linksys controls to see if the iPaq is allowed to associate. Also check MAC control.

Lastly, try assigning a static ip address.

WEP turned off on both WAP & Ipaq.
MAC filtering turned off on WAP and Router.
Static ip tried once beofre information gained from this forum will give that a go later.

I will investigate linksys's website to check for any known issues. But like you say it could be incompatability.

Not "incompatiblity" because I am using a Linksys WAP11 (wireless AP) connected to a Linksys DSL/Cable router with no probs.

Using it to post this ...(from the 'throne', as it were....lol).

I use static IP. No WEP. I am using static IPs w/mac filtering.

NOTE: I only use the iPAQ internal wireless adapter....don't configure the ethernet adapter as I have heard some do.

Use your iPAQ to sniff for other conflicting networks....might need to switch channels (believe the Linksys routers/ap's default to ch#6)

Best advice has been given ..... STATIC IP. Try it ASAP...even if it does not work, it will tell us(you) alot w/regards to troubleshooting.

Good Luck!

As simple as this sounds, try powering off/on the Linksys (just unplug the power from the back and count to 10 or 15 and then plug it back in). Sometimes a Linksys will get "stuck" with garbage characters for MAC addresses in the DHCP table. Take a look at the DHCP clients table under the router config.

The only time I see it on one Linksys router (but not my other Linksys APs and routers) is when people use more than one Netgear dual band PCMCIA wireless NICs.

Edit: If that does fix it, then set your DHCP client lease time short so that the table will clear out at regular intervals.
