5455 or 5555
It seems that I could get either one at almost the same price. The only 3 differences I know of are 128MB vs 64MB, Consumer Ir vs regular Ir, and the processor PXA255 vs PXA250. Abd of course Windows Mobile 2003.

So what do you think: get a 5455 and upgrade it or go 5555 and lose the consumer Ir?

BTW I did own an upgraded 5455 and the so called consumer Ir was nothing to shout about. And its so HUGE.

Price difference & Consumer IR are usually the sticking points in discussions about 5455 vs. 5555. If CIR is not an issue and the price is basically the same, I'd go with the 5555.

I have both. The 5455 is upgraded, btw. That made a big difference on mine. Even so, the 5555 performs better. The extra built-in memory is a very big plus to me. CIR was never a big deal to me.

If there is a big price difference, you may want to search the forums here. There's a similar thread where some folks made a good case for buying a 5455 and using the difference to buy accessories.

I you could get either one for around the same price I would not worry about CIR. You'll find that it is more of a novelty and you won't use it a whole lot. So I would go with the h5555. You get more RAM, Builtin Wifi and BT and you are already at WM2003 so no worries about an upgrade.

Also, WM2003 seems to have problems with the fingerprint reader. The problem is that every time you power on, you get the fingerprint dialog asking you to swipe to get in. No matter what you set it to, this will happen, except for "no password."

Just out of curiousity, how much are you getting the unit for?

Memory is more important than IR control. My 2 cents.

I also agree with the memory vs. IR issue. Unless you are a REALLY heavy user of IR, I would go with the RAM. For me, I stayed with the 5455 because the price was really different. It was a $120 price difference, and for that price I could have bought two 256MB SD cards and had 512MB + 64MB RAM. So that is what I ended up doing, except I went crazy and bought 4 256MB cards. lol.

xboxlord-that $397 price was for a refurbished 5555. I can get a 5455 for $385 from an on-line retailer.

True enough. but if I'm getting a refurb I prefer to get one from HP direct-I noticed that they still have some for $359 (HP Shopping-warehouse outlet).

The bottom line is: I don't NEED a PDA, I just WANT one, so I need to find a new job first (laid off :<).

I presently have a Ipaq 3970, which was heaven sent after my lousy experiece with the failed Jornada 928 WDA.

I want to upgrade but can't decide whether I should wait and see if HP bring out a quality VGA device (rather than the crusty E805, which requires a hack to be used in VGA mode) or just go for the 5555?

I intend to use the device with a 40/60 split between work (databases/word docs/diary management) and entertainment (Action/arcade Games/E-books/Movies).

I just pray that VGA games follow hot on the trail of the (promised) VGA enabled devices.

I haven't heard about any upcoming iPaqs except the rumored h6000 series. It would be cool if HP came out with a VGA-enabled PDA soon. I'm thinking that we might not hear anything until the April-May timeframe.

I would wait another month to see what happens. There should be some announcements I'm hoping. Keep your eyes peeled on this site!

sorry to get side tracked but are the 5450 and 5550 upgradable to wm2003se? that would be the real clincher for me, as I'm considering upgrading from my h2210, has anyone any experiance of using both the h5450/5550 series and h2210 series ipaqs? how do they compare?
thanks
Rob
