Wifi problems
I'm having problems with the wireless modem on my Ipaq 5555.

In the 'Ipaq wireless' section, the WLAN doesn't turn on - the display light (in the program, not the physical one on the Ipaq) turns to green, but the physical light on the top does not turn on -neither green or orange.
Even after closing the 'Ipaq wireless' screen, the WLAN indicator is still green - even after supposedly turning it off on the display. Its as if the wireless modem isnt there! I've tried a soft-reset with no success. I don't particularly want to try a hard-reset as I don't want the hassle of re-installing everything and setting it all up again.

Is this a known problem with modem in the 5555?

It was working fine until last week and no new programs / games have been installed.

Not sure if it makes a difference, but under the 'asset viewer', the WLAN has -

Hardware Version - 6.3
Firmware Version - 0.100.5.39
Driver Version - 3.2.2.96
Module Release Date - 02.09.05
MAC Address - 00.02.8A.B7-40-10

Thanks in advance,

James

HP has a newer WLAN driver update that what you have. The latest update that is available is 3.2.4.129. It should help improve connectivity. You can find the latest driver update here.

Don't worry - all solved - I took the battey out for 10 seconds and it works fine now!

Is it worth updating the WLAN driver? Does it improve connectivity significantly?

Thanks,

James

That I cannot fully answer since I do not have a h5555. I would hold off for now and see how things work for you. If you continue to have problems with your wireless connection that I would consider giving the new driver a try. If you install it and find that it causes more problems for you then you can always uninstall it. It is a installable driver and not a ROM update so no major changes would happen to your PPC.

You'll find that you'll need to do the "pull the battery trick" from time to time, even if you do install the new driver.

In fact, I had to pull the battery after the driver update just to get the WLAN to work. This was on both my 5555 and my wife's 5455. I honestly haven't noticed much difference. It does seem to connect a little quicker.

btw, I just enabled WEP on my wireless access point. Boy was that a fun process to get the iPAQs to connect to it afterward...

Hi, I've had the same problem as first mentioned.

Had my 5550 for several months, no problems, then the said problem would arise just when I wanted to use the Wi-Fi for connection.

I have had to hard reset at least 10 (yes 10) times over the last few weeks each time loading my programmes one by one.

In the end I got absolutely fed up (that was to put it very mildly) with the whole experience.

I very nearly reverted to my old and trusty 3970, then I performed one more hard reset, but this time I did not install a programme (a virus checker) which I'd only been using for a short while and hey presto (at the moment) all seems to be in order and complient!!!!!

I've always installed the latest drivers, firmware, and ROM Updates so my 5550 has always been 'topped up' so to speak in order not to miss out on anything important or neccessary to help the performance.

I had the same problem with my 5555. No rhyme or reason, just no green light on the Ipaq, and the the little happy noise saying 'oh ya, I'm working.....' sound. Did the battery trick, fixed everything, then loaded the new update. So far (knock, knock) everything seems to be working fine.

I am using h5450 and having problem with my wifi as well.

What happen is whenever i try to turn the WLAN on, it does nothing. There is no light blinking on top, the WLAN status page only keep on saying initiating, and the WLAN is not turned on although it has already been turn on.

At first i notice whenever i install a wifi related app such as PocketWinc, it cause my wifi to stalled. I have to hard reset my ipaq just to get it working again and sometimes i took more than a couple of hard reset to get it work. What i do after each hard reset i try to install the software again sometimes it work flawlessly.

I already log a call to HP support and they claim that it was my software. But i dont see other user have the same problem like mine.

Does anyone here suffer the same problem or it just me? I keep on telling HP that it was the hardware and they wont believe me. I already have trouble upgrade the WLAN firmware b4 and i have to do some hard reset to get it done.

Spec:

ROM version: 1.11.19
WLAN
Firmware: Version 0.100.5.39
Driver: 3.2.2.84

I have gone on the presumtion that some of my software has caused this problem, for the simple reason is that it all worked flawlessly until recently.

I have used Pocket WinCe but always locked up my Wi-Fi, so I won't use it, the same goes for the virus scanner I tried, all ok untill I installed this programme, then problems although intermittantly.

I did try an experiment after my last hard reset. Not installing any software for a short while until I had checked that the Wi-Fi was working ok. This it did, so I introduced other programmes that I use on a regular basis until I had a problem, this being the virus scanner. Since then as I said earlier in the thread all is going well at the moment.

So it may be as well to consider that some software programmes may interfere or be incompatible with Wi-Fi and other software programmes on the iPAQ.

I would be interested if any one else has similar ideas or other solving situations to rectify this problem.

Airscanner, although very good, didn't seem to like my iPAQ particularly with Wi-Fi.

Well what b****r, the wretched Wi-fi did it to me again! It's been ok for a few days but went to use it today & it was fine on my first two connections, but on my third of the day: Green symbol in the Wireless screen on but no orange hardware light flashing or sound. Pulled the battery and hey presto all is ok. I'm going to reset the iPAQ and just install the basic software programmes I need then try again for a while.

Does this indicate software malfunction or what?

I have installed the latest ROM upgrade when it was released and it still happens.

Oh well, I'll just have to keep on trying!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've just been looking on HP's site forums for iPAQs.

It seems as if this is a very common problem with the 5550 and 5555 both before the latest ROM upgrade and since, with many queries as why, how it can be fixed. The general response is to remove the battery when ever this happens. This doesn't sound good whichever way one looks at this.

But hey ho, I'll carry on working at a solution if I can.

But I will contact the HP techies about this to see if there is a solution. If I find out I'll let you all know.

Been in touch, today, with the HP techies here in the UK, they've advised me to redo the latest ROM Upgrade, just in case there was a glitch when I did my last ROM upgrade. It appears it is a software issue not a hardware one.

If not I have to contact them again to see what else they can do to help.

Be interesting to see what happens!!!!
